Boxing tournament attracts international fighters Posted: 08 Feb 2013 04:03 AM PST KUALA Lumpur's G. Ramkumar punched his way to providing joy for the hosts with his victory in the 69kg contest of the Kuala Lumpur City Day International Boxing Tournament at the Titiwangsa Stadium recently. Despite trailing by three points (4-7) in the opening round, the 22-year-old boxing instructor bounced back strongly in the final two rounds for a 22-18 win over Mohd Azwadi Ismail from the Navy in the final. Ramkumar said he was not concerned about the slow start as he found his rhythm to reduce the deficit and went on to chalk up a point advantage (11-10) at the end of the penultimate round. "When my opponent shot ahead, I knew that I was going to catch up. The opening round served as an opportunity for me to get into the right momentum to find my way to subdue my opponent. I gained confidence with a respectable performance in the second round. I went on a high to pull away as I moved closer to secure the win in the decisive final round," he added. Meanwhile, boxers from the Philippines showed they were a class above and flexed their command in the tussle for supremacy. They captured five of the eight titles at stake through Jade Bornea (49kg), Roldan Jr Boncales (52kg), Jonas Bacho (56kg), Magliquian (60kg) and Eumir Felix Marcial (64kg). Magliquian faced the stiffest test before he was declared the winner in a closely-contested bout with Abdullatef Mohamad Sadiq from Qatar with the final score level at 16-16. Qatar's Hzam Ahmad Nabah had an easier stint without having to go the full distance in the first round for the top position on the podium in the 75kg section when the referee stopped the contest in his match-up against Arif Md Nor of Air Force. Singapore also captured the top spot with Zakaria Ismail winning in the 81kg category. The champions pocketed US$1,000 each for their victories in their respective sections. The recent six-day meet hosted by the Kuala Lumpur Amateur Boxing Association and Kuala Lumpur City Hall was held in conjunction with Kuala Lumpur City Day celebrations. Besides the Malaysian contenders featuring under several banners, other foreign entries from Brunei, Hong Kong and Uzbekistan also joined the occasion. New training camp to help Malaysian triathletes scale greater heights Posted: 08 Feb 2013 03:59 AM PST THE newly set-up Malaysian Elite Triathlon (MET) will be providing a firm stepping stone for promising athletes to pursue their dreams in scaling greater heights in the multi-sport endurance race at international meets. For a start, the training camp, under the care of coach Steve Lumley, said it wants to inspire trainees in registering significant breakthroughs at competitions under the International Triathlon Union (ITU) championships calendar, especially in the South-East Asian region this year. "We have created a systematic training environment for the athletes to go through the paces on their own as well as with support from team members in the group. "Besides doing well at the domestic races, it is important that we take a brave step forward to compete against stronger competitors from other countries in higher-level international championships. "We have to guide the youngsters to set realistic goals in a more competitive environment," Steve said. They formed the core group comprising a total of 10 athletes in the MET training squad when they named the side at the end of last year. Among the athletes in the line-up are Edan Syah, Hafiz Farez, Kev Teh Kuok Yuen, Barry Lee, Aldrian Yeo, Irene Chong, Rikigoro Shinozuka, Nik Eman Qairul, Edwin Thiang and Lee Teng Wei. "It was an easy task to pick the team. We have seen majority of them in action in recent years. Several of them wrote to us and requested to be included in the team. We are sure that we can still beef up the team's set-up with unknown potential candidates out there," said Steve, adding that athletes with sound background in swimming will have an advantage in joining the team. Recently, national top ranked boys' Junior Elite (16 to 19 years) triathlete Rikigoro confirmed his entry for the upcoming Geelong International Triathlon Union (ITU) Sprint Oceania Cup in Australia on Feb 9 and 10. The 18-year-old Rikigoro holds a personal best of 1'04:10 when he finished as the runner-up in the sprint distance of 750m in the water followed by a 20km bicycle ride before the final leg of a 5km run in the men's 14-to-25 age group at last season's Port Dickson International Triathlon last year. Steve said it was too early in the season to set high targets for Rikigoro to produce outstanding results. "He (Rikigoro) is in good condition. He has been training alongside the national cycling team to experience the intense race temperament for the cycling leg. "We have studied the layout of the course in Geelong from the information provided on the Internet. It is going to fast going around the flat course. As the sole Malaysian and probably the only Asian in the field, it is a good experience for him to gain valuable exposure matching his challengers from Australia, New Zealand, Germany, France, Ireland and the United States," he added. Meanwhile, MET are also planning a strong representation with their trainees taking part at the Nakhon Si Thammarat ITU Triathlon Asian Cup in Thailand on March 16 and 17. And Rikigoro is also expected to step up for his attempt tackling the longer Olympic distance event comprising 1.5km swim, 40km cycle and 10km run in Thailand.
