Hammering down illegal gambling Posted: 23 Jan 2013 07:18 PM PST TEMERLOH: More illegal gambling outlets in the guise of cybercafes are being shut down as the police intensified its operations against the menace. Last week, more outlets here and in Mentakab were raided by the police under its on-going Ops Dadu. OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Aziz Salleh said acting on a public tip-off and their own surveillance, the outlets were raided just after midnight. He said three caretakers and 10 regular patrons were detained during the raids for questioning. "We seized a total of 58 computer sets, three main servers, modems and other paraphernalia, in addition to RM731 in cash. "All the suspects were released after questioning," he told a press conference. ACP Abdul Aziz said the case would be investigated under Section 4B(a) of the Common House Gambling Act 1953, which carries a minimum fine of RM10,000 for each machine seized or up to five years in prison. He said investigations would also be carried out under Section 4(1)(b) of the Entertainment Enactment 1993 against owners of the premises. "We urge the public to continue providing us information on any illegal activities in their neighbourhood. "On our part, we will take stern action against such outlets to prevent them from flourishing," he said. ACP Abdul Aziz said last year, 83 successful raids were carried out in the district. He said a total of 91 caretakers and 438 patrons were detained in the operations. "We seized 1,517 computer sets and RM26,278 in cash," he said, adding that total seizure was worth RM481,378. For the first two weeks of this year, police successfully conducted 12 raids which saw the arrests of 12 caretakers and 27 patrons. |
Top UK university offers world-class education in Nusajaya Posted: 23 Jan 2013 07:18 PM PST NUSAJAYA: University of Southampton Malaysia Campus (USMC) wants to play a pivotal role in increasing the number of engineers in the country with the opening of its campus in EduCity here. Its chief executive officer, Prof John McBride, said University of Southampton was among the best research universities in the world. He added that the university was ranked within the top 100 universities in the world and featured in the top two universities in the UK for engineering research and education. "Our ambition is to have a similar status within Malaysia as being a premier university for engineering education and engineering research. "We have established a branch campus within the EduCity development in Iskandar Malaysia which marks University of Southampton's first ever international campus," he said. McBride said USMC would enable students to experience its world-class education in Malaysia. "Since we opened in October last year, we have 22 students currently pursuing the Masters of Mechanical Engineering programme and we hope to increase the number to 150 by introducing the Electronic and Electrical Engineering (EEE) programme in September. "We want to attract about 3,000 local and international students once our main campus is complete in the next eight years," he told a press conference at the university here, recently. He said students would have to spend two years of their programme in USMC before completing their studies at the main campus in the UK for two years. McBride added that their university graduates were the most sought after as many of them held important positions in multi national companies including Apple, Google, Airbus and Rolls Royce. "Our research engineers are working closely with Formula One teams to develop cars as we have one of the biggest wind tunnels in the world. "One of our well known alumni is Red Bull Racing chief technical officer Adrian Newey who helped the team to win consecutive world titles," he said. |
Socso to launch free health screening for workers over 40 Posted: 23 Jan 2013 03:00 PM PST MALACCA: A total of 1.9 million employees aged 40 and above will enjoy the Health Screening Program (HSP) introduced by Social Security Organisation (Socso), starting this year. Socso's deputy chief executive (operations), Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed, said the programme was aimed at enhancing the health status of workers. He said HSP was an effort to identify employees facing risks of non-communicable diseases apart from promoting a healthy lifestyle among workers. "Employees will receive vouchers that will be distributed via their respective Human Resource departments in stages, starting from January, where the employees can attend health screening at selected Socso panel clinics. "So far, we have 750 private clinics that have registered with us nationwide and 250 are still awaiting approval," he said adding that Socso was targeting the participation of nearly 3,000 private clinics to make the programme successful. Mohammed Azman was speaking to the media after the HSP Briefing Programme at Malacca Sosco headquarters here, recently. Also present was the organisation's state director, V. Mohanadas. Mohammed Azman said employees with vouchers could undergo screening for haemoglobin levels, glucose, cholesterol and urine checks to prevent diseases related to diabetes, hypertension, stroke and cancer at any early stage. For women, he said they would get two additional screenings on mammograms and pap smear tests. |
