Malaysian music set to go on a new high at Midem

Posted: 17 Jan 2013 04:34 PM PST

PETALING JAYA: Malaysian music is set to take another step towards international recognition.

For the first time, there will be a showcase of Malaysian artistes at Midem, the largest music industry trade fair in the world.

The event, called "Malaysian Supernova", will be held at the Salon des Ambassadeurs in Cannes, France, on Jan 27.

Among the artistes who will perform include indie rockers Hujan and Bunkface, deejay duo Goldfish & Blink, pop songstresses Amanda Imani and Jaclyn Victor, R&B starlet Nadhira, electropop diva Ze! and reggae ambassador Sasi The Don.

Traditionally held during the Cannes Film Festival, Midem stands for "Marché International du Disque et de l'Edition Musicale", and is attended by thousands of musicians, producers and talent scouts, making it the perfect place to showcase Malaysian music.

The initiative is funded by the Information, Communications and Culture Ministry in collaboration with the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM).

"We hope that this will be a great start to a long term and strategic collaboration between the Government and the music industry," said RIM chairman Norman Halim.

"Quite a number of our artistes have made their own initiatives to promote their talents abroad (such as Zee Avi, Yuna, Shila Amzah, Aniu, Michael & Victor, and Fish Leong).

However, to make a real long term impact and generate larger economic returns, the collaboration between the Government and the music industry is very much needed," he said.

"Our objective is primarily to grow both domestic and international markets concurrently."

The artistes were chosen based on their music genre, being export ready, proficiency in English, credentials and awards, and representation of Malaysia's various ethic backgrounds.

K-Pop gold

Posted: 17 Jan 2013 04:17 PM PST

Some of K-Pop's biggest stars were in Malaysia this week to attend the 27th Golden Disk Awards.

What's the best way to begin 2013? Why by partying with 25 of the most daebak K-Pop acts at one of the biggest K-Pop events in Malaysia – the Samsung Galaxy 27th Golden Disk Awards (GDA) in Kuala Lumpur, of course! Some 15,000 roaring K-Pop fans and equally colourful international media from China, Taiwan, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam, Myanmar, Indonesia, Singapore, Australia and the United States attended.

Known as the "Korean Grammys", the prestigious music awards was held for two days and for the first time in Malaysia. It took place at the Sepang F1 Circuit earlier this week.

Leggy K-Pop girl acts heated up the show as they paraded their sexy gams in bodysuits, short shorts and mini skirts. Not to be outdone, the boy bands dazzled with their slick dance routines.

CNBlue's Jung Yong Hwa and Kara's Nicole Jung served as emcees on the first night while FTIsland's Lee Hong Ki and SISTAR's Kim Dasom hosted the second night.

As anticipated, top awards at the GDA went to international star Psy for his worldwide hit song Gangnam Style and Super Junior for its latest album.

Boy band Super Junior was also the biggest winner at the GDA with three wins. Not only did SuJu retain the Disk Daesang (the group's third in four years) or Album Of The Year award for its sixth Korean studio album Sexy, Free & Single, it also nabbed the MSN South-East Asia Award as well as a Disk Bonsang (album division).

Meanwhile, Big Bang won the MSN International Star Award as well as a Digital Bonsang (song division) for Fantastic Baby and its leader G-Dragon won the CeCi Popularity Award and a Digital Bonsang for Crayon.

Malaysia's Most Favourite Award went to CNBlue and KARA, who also nabbed a Disk Bonsang each for their albums Ear Fun (CNBlue) and Pandora (KARA).

Rock band FTIsland's Grown-Up also won a Disk Bonsang while its leader Hong Ki took home the InStyle Fashionista Award.

Malaysia's Minister of Tourism Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen also graced the awards show to lend her support to the local K-Pop community. Thousands of K-Pop fans greeted her as she stepped on stage to announce the winner of the Digital Daesang (Song Of The Year) Award. The coveted award inevitably went to global phenomenon Psy for his record-breaking viral hit Gangnam Style. Psy was unable to make it to awards show, but a recording of him saying his thanks was shown to the audience.

It appears no show can end without everyone doing the famous horse-riding dance, and that was exactly what happened at the GDA – the K-Pop stars and their fans all rocked the Gangnam Style.
