Cycling to promote hill resorts Posted: 29 Nov 2011 04:30 PM PST CAMERON HIGHLANDS: The endurance, patience and strength of 70 cyclists who took part in the 187km Fraser Hill-Cameron Highlands Range Ride were tested as it was literally an uphill task for them in certain parts of the journey. The range ride involving two of the state's popular highland resorts was introduced by the state government because cycling is fast gaining popularity in Pahang. Those who took part included members from the police force, National Sports Council and cycling clubs and associations. They started at 8.30am and had breaks in several stops in Raub town,Batu Talam, Pos Betau and Kampong Lenyar. The trip was mainly a leisure ride but a section of it was made into a race that began from Habu to Tanah Rata, a 9km-distance. According to State Culture, Arts, Heritage and Tourism Committee chairman Datuk Shafik Fauzan Shariff, the route from Fraser Hill to Cameron Highlands involved a new highway, connecting Sungai Koyan in Lipis to Ringlet in Cameron Highlands. "Travelling time from towns in west of Pahang will be reduced. However, there is not much difference if one travels from Kuantan," he said. He added that the new route was one of the alternative roads for people to travel to the highlands. He said the normal route that travellers would take was via Tapah, (Perak), Simpang Pulai (Perak) and Gua Musang (Kelantan). "This new route, which is 80km from Sungai Koyan to Ringlet, passes through several orang asli settlements such as Pos Betau, Kampung Meter, Kampung Lenyar and Kampung Menson. "It is also a gate away to a popular homestay programme - Kampung Kuala Medang while Sungai Koyan in Lipis is a popular stopover for those travelling from the west coast to Kota Baru," Shafiq Fauzan added. He also said there were various local products made of rattan, wood and bamboos produced by the villagers in Sungai Koyan and Kuala Medang as well as handicrafts by the orang asli. There were food and fruit stalls along the way which travellers could stop by and enjoy while taking into the natural, scenic and unspoilt environment, he added. On the cycling activity, Shafik Fauzan said the idea to introduce the range ride was part of the continuous efforts to promote the two highland resorts via the new route. "Previously, those who want to go to Cameron Highlands will use the Gohtong Jaya near Genting Highlands or Batu Caves in Selangor passing through Rawang before proceeding to Tapah. "They will also use the route from Raub, using the Gap road or fron Kuala Kubu Baru, exiting to the North South Highway before entering Tapah or Simpang Pulai in Perak," he added. The race from Habu to Tanah Rata was won by Mohd Razif Salleh of Paracycling Team who took home RM1,500. Second place was won by Nik Mohamad Azwan from the police team who bagged RM1,000 while third placing and RM800 belonged to his team mate, Shaiful Ahmad. The prizes were given away by Cameron Highlands MP and Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk S.K.Devamany. Full content generated by Get Full RSS. |
Land office orders developers to take back land of errant ratepayers Posted: 29 Nov 2011 02:45 PM PST JOHOR BARU: Owners of the 627 apartment units in Bandar Selesa Jaya, Skudai here are being urged to pay backdated land taxes, some unpaid since 2009. Due to the amount of RM37,000 in unpaid land taxes, the land office had issued notices to the developer to take back the land. BSJ Properties Sdn Bhd property maintenance assistant officer Basiran Samsuddin said, BSJ Properties, the developer of the apartments, was forced to settle the amount themselves. "Despite sending letters and notices to the home owners, about 40% of them are still not bothered to pay the tax," he told a press conference organised by Johor Baru MCA public complaints bureau chairman Chia Song Cheng here recently. He added that the land tax was only RM21.25 a year and the owners should pay it annually. "We have taken a lot of steps to remind owners to settle the outstanding payments and this includes sending them individual notices. "A lot of the owners are not staying in the units and have changed their mailing addresses so it is difficult to contact them," he told a press conference here yesterday. He called on the residents to settle their debts to obtain strata titles for the units. "We hope that the owners will come forward and pay up as soon as possible or by the end of this year to avoid accumulating more debt," he said. Meanwhile, Chia said that he had been working closely with the developer to deal with the land office since May this year. "I hope that residents will be more responsible and come forward and pay the developers who have been considerate enough to fork out the money on their behalf," he said. Graduates from course showing a lot of promise Posted: 29 Nov 2011 04:28 PM PST BATU PAHAT: Wireman, Johari Abdul Ali, was nervous when the Youth and Sports Department approached him early this year and invited him to teach. Now, the 26-year-old automotive electrical wiring repair shop owner can call himself a proud teacher when two of his students received graduate certificates on Automative (Motor Vechicle Mechanic) course recently. The students - Mohd Fadli Isa, 23, and Nor Azwan Zamari, 24, - were among 100 participants who completed a six-month Belia Mahir 1Malaysia and 3K Belia Bestari programmes in various fields including electric and mechanical, food preparation, information and communication technology as well as saloon and beauty. The project is an apprenticeship programme under the Youth and Sports Ministry to encourage more youths to get involved in skilled jobs and careers. The participants received level one Sijil Kemahiran Malaysia (SKM) certs from Youth and Sports deputy Minister Gan Ping Sieu during a state level graduation ceremony held in Kluang. Johari, who has 13 years of exprience in vehicle wiring repair works, said it was one of his greatest satisfaction after starting his own business a few years ago. "This is my first teaching experience, I have to teach them from scratch and am fortunate because my students are fast learners and hardworking," he said during an interview at his workshop in Taman Nira here. Johari said he repairs car, lorry, boat, tractor and other type of vehicles. "Wiring work is tedious and a precarious task. It can cause danger to vehicle users if works are not properly done. I am happy that my students began to show interest and picked up the skill," he said, adding that he had hired both of his students. At the graduation ceremony, Gan also presented certificates of appreciation to 46 mentors and employers, who participated in the programme and helped to train the youths. "We are really thankful to the employers and mentors as the programme would not be a success without their involvement," he said, adding that up todate, a total of 3,540 or an average of 10 participants from each district in the country had graduated from this programme.
