Decommissioned submarine used as a museum in Klebang Posted: 24 Nov 2011 06:10 PM PST MALACCA: A decommissioned Royal Malaysian Navy submarine was finally hoisted to its exhibition site at the 1Malaysia Square in Klebang here. The relocation exercise was supposed to begin on Nov 14 but deferred due to the sea turbulence. The vessel has been converted into a museum submarine and opened for public tours for 10 days from Nov 22. Malacca Chief Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam said the submarine, a French-made SMD Ouessant (Agosta 70 class) submarine, which was built in 1979, had been handed over to the state government. The submarine museum project costing RM12.6mil is expected to draw more tourists to the state, he said. Tickets for the exhibition are priced at RM3 for adults and RM1 for children while senior citizens will get a 50% discount, he told reporters at the Submarine Museum here. The Agosta submarine was used for training by the first Malaysian submarine crews from 2005 to 2009 following a contract signed by Malaysia for the acquisition of two French Scorpene submarines in 2002. The submarine was transported on a floating dock back to Malaysia on the first week of October before the vessel was handed over to the state government. Full content generated by Get Full RSS. |
Iskandar Johor Open winner lifts trophy by one stroke difference Posted: 24 Nov 2011 06:13 PM PST JOHOR BARU: Dutchman Joost Luiten wins his first ever tournament under the European Tour when he won the US2mil Iskandar Johor Open by one stroke here. Luiten, 25, who is ranked 93rd in the world, finished with 15-under par tally to win the tournament which was held at Horizon Hills Golf and Country Club here. The tournament was reduced to 54 holes due to rainy conditions. Luiten who played with an astounding eight-under 63 had taken the lead in the first round but later suffered setbacks due to the rainy weather on the second and third days. However, he came back strongly on the final day to nick the trophy from Sweden's Daniel Chopra who finished second. "I had a couple of birdies in the final day which helped me to catch up with Chopra and take the lead. "Once I had overtook him, I knew that the only person that could beat me was myself," he said, adding that it was a nerve-wrecking finals as he had never won a professional tournament in his career before. Luiten added that winning the Iskandar Johor Open would give him a boost especially in the next European Tour tournament in Dubai and the upcoming World Golf Cup. "The unpredictable weather here is an additional challenge for me as the day will start with sunny conditions but suddenly turn stormy the next. "The course at the golf club here is beautiful and I will return here again next year to defend my title," he said, adding that he hoped to break into the top 50 world ranking with the win. Luiten becomes the fourth Dutch golfer to win in the European Tour and the first since Robert Jan Derksen won the 2005 Maderia Islands Open. Chopra from Sweden, who was the leader going into the third and final round, had the chance to force a play-off but he missed his 15-foot eagle in a round of 70 for second place at 14-under par. Last year's winner Padraig Harrington also needed an eagle to force a play-off but ended with a par in a round of 69 to share third on 13-under par. Full content generated by Get Full RSS. |
