Genting is jersey sponsor for Aston Villa

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 03:47 PM PDT

PETALING JAYA: Genting has become the jersey sponsor for a Barclays Premier League football club, Aston Villa FC.

Its subsidiary, Genting UK, the largest operator of casinos in Britain, entered into an agreement to be the main jersey sponsor for Aston Villa for two years.

As part of the agreement, the Genting mark and logo will be featured on home and away Aston Villa jerseys.

The financial details of the agreement were not revealed.

Genting UK executive deputy chairman Peter Brooks in a press statement said the sponsorship was "a natural fit" and marked an important milestone in Genting's development as the group continued to expand its presence both within Britain and internationally.

The group began its association with Birmingham in the 1970s, where the club is based.

"The fact that Genting has strong local connections in addition to its international dimension makes this a good relationship for the club and we anticipate that it will work well as we embark on a new chapter for Aston Villa," club CEO Paul Faulkner said.

Aston Villa, nicknamed the Villains is the fifth most decorated club in English football history with 19 major domestic honours and is one of only five British clubs to have won the European Cup.

Many Malaysian firms have sponsored English football teams prior to this with Proton being the first in 2004 when it sponsored Norwich City's jersey.

In 2008, AirAsia inked a three-year sponsorship deal to have its logo on all the jerseys of professional football referees in England.

Last year, Manchester United and Telekom Malaysia Bhd forged a five-year agreement to link the two brands in marketing campaigns and promotional activities.

Last week it was announced that Cardiff City's jersey for the coming season will have Malaysia's name emblazoned on the front, an initiative from the club's owner and Berjaya Corp Bhd founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan.

Sungai Besi land for Government’s housing development

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 03:48 PM PDT

PETALING JAYA: A portion of the old Sungai Besi airport land will be utilised for property development under the Government's quality housing scheme, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said the land would be developed by 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) after the airport base closed.

"A certain portion of the land will be used for quality affordable housing for the rakyat," he said during a live interview with Chinese- language radio station One FM yesterday.

The land had earlier been awarded to 1MDB to be developed into Bandar Malaysia, which will include residential, commercial and recreational areas.

Najib said the scheme, dubbed Perumahan Rakyat 1Malaysia (Prima), would offer homes at below market value as part of a public- private partnership to provide affordable housing.

He said big property companies including Sime Darby, SP Setia and Putrajaya Corporation had been invited to participate in the programme. However, he stressed, the development would be done under a social business model.

"The developers are not there to make money but to provide quality affordable housing.

"They have to present their business model and costing and we will do an analysis to make sure they don't make but don't lose money either," he said.

Najib also encouraged homebuyers to leverage on the recent 100% financing policy initiated through the Government's My First Home scheme launched in March.

Under this scheme, Malaysians aged 35 and below who meet the requirements are eligible to purchase a house priced no higher than RM220,000 with 100% financing.

To ensure transparency, Najib said a special unit under the Prime Minister's Department would be set up to determine who would get the homes.

"We want to show that the distribution is handled fairly and in a transparent manner, so people who deserve houses get houses," he said, adding that condominium units might be included as well.

He later on tweeted that Prima would be launched in July.

PSD to focus on giving study awards to top pre-university students next year

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 04:00 PM PDT

PETALING JAYA: A total policy review for Public Service Department (PSD) scholarships will focus on awarding grants to top students who excel at pre-university, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said the review, set to be conducted next year, would gear PSD scholarships towards students who achieved excellent results in their pre-university courses instead of the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM).

"Giving scholarships at SPM level is not a good idea. Even if students do well in their O-levels, it doesn't mean they will do well in their A-levels," he said during a One FM Morning Kaki radio show yesterday.

Najib added that scholarships should be awarded to those able to achieve very good results and a place in top universities.

Najib said a small bursary would be given to top SPM scorers instead for them to pursue their pre-university studies such as matriculation, A-levels and Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM).

"These are perspectives we need to take on board when we work out the new policy next year," he said.

Najib stressed that the Government had tried to be "as fair and balanced as possible" in its allocation of PSD scholarships.

Currently, PSD scholarships are available to SPM top scorers who achieved eight A+ in all their subjects.

It is distributed in four categories: academic achievement (20%), racial composition (60%), bumiputra allocation in Sabah and Sarawak (10%) and socially disadvantaged (10%).

"We have tried to find a formula that meets the needs of all communities in the country," said Najib.

He said he would soon make a decision on the 500 recipients of the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) grants.

They will be able to further their studies in local public and private higher education institutions.
