Employment Bill passed after 5 hours of debate Posted: 06 Oct 2011 08:27 AM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: The Employment (Amendment) Bill 2011, which received strong resistance from opposition members of Parliament, was passed after undergoing more than five hours of debate in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday. In tabling the second reading of the bill, Minister of Human Resources Datuk S. Subramaniam said the amended act was to enable a more systematic monitoring and control of labour supply agencies especially in isolated areas. Apart from that, the ministry would also have a comprehensive record of workers to facilitate monitoring. In winding up the debate on the bill, Subramaniam said the registration of sub-contractors with the ministry would also ensure outsourcing was not a culture of the employment sector. The issue of labour supply agency registration was hotly debated by opposition members who wanted the bill to be repealed and the recruitment of workers as well as their welfare to be managed directly by the employer. Among those who objected to the bill were Abdullah Sani Abdul Hamid (PKR-Kuala Langat), M.Kulasegaran (DAP-Ipoh Barat) and Michael Jeyakumar Devaraj (PSM-Sungai Siput). "The Malaysian Trades Union Congress is also not in favour of the bill and they held a picket outside the Parliament on Monday," said Abdullah Sani. Debating for the bill were Datuk Bung Moktar Radin (BN-Kinabatangan) and Khairy Jamaluddin Abu Bakar (BN-Rembau). The Dewan sits again Friday. - Bernama |
Socso paid out RM1.6bil compensation last year Posted: 06 Oct 2011 06:47 AM PDT KUALA KRAI: The Social Security Organisation (Socso) paid out RM1.6bil in compensation to 52,639 workers who were involved in accidents at the workplace and while travelling to and from work last year, Socso deputy chief executive (operations) Dr Mohammed Azman Aziz Mohammed said Thursday. He also said that in Kelantan alone, Socso paid out RM1.6mil in benefits to 1,300 people who were involved in accidents at the workplace. However, he expressed regret that there were employers who did not make Socso contributions for their workers because it was important for their welfare. Dr Mohammed Azman said Socso took the proactive measure of going down to the ground to trace contributors who had been involved in accidents even before being notified by their employers. He spoke to reporters during the presentation today of a cheque for RM3,000 as funeral aid to the three children of a married couple who were killed in a road accident in Kampung Che Wa near here on Oct 1. The couple, Ismail Yaacob, 50, and Ruzainah Mustapha, 37, were killed when the motorcycle they were riding was knocked down by a car near the Ikatan Jaguh sawmill where they had worked in Telekong near here. Dr Mohammed Azman said the three children Siti Norhafizah Ismail, 16, Siti Khairunnisa, 14, and Siti Rasha Aleeya, six, would receive Socso benefits until they were 18, besides being eligible for Socso educational loans of up to RM100,000 for tertiary education. They would also receive a monthly payment of RM250 under the Dependent Persons Benefit beginning next month, he added. The children are now staying with their uncle, Azman Mustapha, 45, in the village. - Bernama |
