150 volunteers do their part in cleaning up the shoreline Posted: 10 Oct 2011 06:33 PM PDT TERENGGANU: Vincent van Gogh once said, "Great things are done by a series of small things brought together"which sums up the idea behind the world's largest annual volunteer cleanup effort by the International Coastal Cleanup (ICC). Led by the Ocean Conservancy, more than half a million volunteers in over 100 countries remove millions of pounds of trash from beaches and waterways all over the world each year. By cleaning up the shorelines, concerned citizens are doing their part to help make the ocean more resilient to the harmful effects of climate change, pollution, overfishing, and damaged habitat. In Malaysia, the programme is led by The Body Shop, with the support from The Coca-Cola Company as its official sponsor. This year's cleanup marked the 26th year of ICC in Malaysia. The cleanup held recently at Sutra Beach Resort & Spa at Merang, Terengganu with 150 volunteers from The Body Shop, The Coca-Cola Company, and a nearby school, SMK Lembah Bidong in Setiu working together. Rubbish collected from the 2-hour clean up weighed a total of 395.6kg. Data collected showed that the top three culprits of marine debris were cigarettes and cigarette filters (11.7%), plastic bags (9.2%), and plastic beverage bottles (8.5%). Rampai Niaga Sdn. Bhd general manager Jesse Siew said, "After years of organising the ICC in Malaysia, I am always distressed by the growing amount of trash we collect but heartened by the increasing number of volunteers and the changes we are able to bring about in ourselves to be better stewards of our environment," she shares. "This year, I want to highlight the harm that plastic causes to marine wildlife. We have just released three juvenile hawksbill turtles to the ocean and I pray everyday that they don't choke to death on a plastic bag," added Siew. Coca-Cola Far East Limited (Malaysia) franchise director Agustinus Gunadharma said, "The Coca-Cola Company is committed to help protect and preserve water resources and has been a global partner of the ICC for the past 14 consecutive years. We hope that our continued partnership of the ICC will help provide real solutions to environmental challenges. In the case of Malaysia, it is about responsible disposal of rubbish on a daily basis which both the young and old have to practice, from not littering indiscriminately to recycling." Malaysian-owned football clubs’ jerseys will soon be available in stores nationwide Posted: 10 Oct 2011 06:32 PM PDT JOHOR BARU: Jerseys of Malaysian-owned football clubs Queen Park Rangers (QPR) and Cardiff City Football Club (CCFC) will soon be on the shelves nationwide. Johor Baru-based sporting house Al-Ikhsan Sports Sdn Bhd product manager Julia Ahmad Rais said that the company is in discussions with the kit suppliers to bring in the jerseys to its stores nationwide. "The kit sponsor for QPR is Lotto while Puma is sponsoring CCFC and we hope to bring in the jerseys by early next year. "One of the reasons we decided to bring in the jerseys from both clubs are they are both owned by Malaysians and the word Malaysia is written across the jerseys," she told The Star when contacted. Julia also said that the company have also received requests from their customers ever since Malaysians bought over both clubs as many of their customers wanted to buy such jerseys from their outlets here. "Even though many Malaysians support well known clubs such as Manchester United, Liverpool, Arsenal, Chelsea or Barcelona we expect QPR and CCFC jerseys to be well received here as well," she said. IT analyst Mohd Bukhari Murad, 27, who is based in Cyberjaya, said that he could not wait to get his hands on a QPR jersey soon. "My friends and I have been looking to buy QPR jerseys in the Klang Valley area but it is like looking for a needle in a haystack. "I wanted to buy a QPR jersey as the owner is a Malaysian and the club is currently playing in the Barclays Premier League which is the top league in England," he said adding that he is an avid fan of Manchester United. Administrative officer Mohd Syafiq Hanif Hamli, 25, who is an Arsenal fan, said that he would buy both QPR and CCFC jerseys, as he is proud that Malaysians own both clubs. "I would be proud to wear such jerseys as the name of Malaysia is on both QPR and CCFC jerseys," he said. AirAsia's chief steward and major shareholder Tan Sri Tony Fernandes is the chairman of QPR while Tan Sri Vincent Tan owns 36.1% of CCFC currently playing in English football's second division league. Recently, international hip-hop star Snoop Dogg was also seen wearing a CCFC jersey with the word Malaysia printed across the jersey during a promotional clip on his upcoming tour in the United Kingdom.
