Essence of Chinatown captured on film Posted: 06 Oct 2011 04:36 AM PDT A NUMBER of readers have shared with StarMetro their fondness for Chinatown through their interesting old and new snapshots. The hustle and bustle of the area has yet again proven to be of endless inspiration to shutterbugs. The unique culture created by a rich history, vintage architecture and bustling trades makes its way into the photographs, some presented in an artistic manner while others with a sense of nostalgia. The area holds sentimental value for not only those who were born and bred there but others who visited regularly for the authentic food, affordable merchandise and vibrant atmosphere. We express our gratitute to Oh Chin Eng, Shahril Afendy Bakhtiar, JasonW, Calvin Hoh, Steven Lee and Jalan Sultan traders for the photographs. Jalan Sultan mural The Star's 'Preserve Our Heritage' Campaign hopes to raise awareness and to garner public support to safeguard our heritage. In the wake of intended acquisition and possible demolition of century-old buildings in Jalan Sultan for the MRT project, The Star, in partnership with Dulux, is joining forces with a group of 50 artists on an art installation to lend our support to the local community. With Jalan Sultan as the inspiration, the artists will collaborate in the painting of a wall on Oct 15 as their collective expression of the importance of heritage preservation. |
