Claim of Myanmar workers operating businesses illegally Posted: 27 Sep 2011 07:58 PM PDT MALACCA: Some Myanmar workers here are allegedly running their own businesses illegally. Ayer Keroh assemblyman Khoo Poay Tiong who alerted StarMetro on the issue said the foreigners had a business network ranging from food and beverage to retail and foreign currency exchange. "They cater to their countrymen by serving local dishes and also selling mobile phone reload cards. "Their outlets are also equipped with cable television and provide foreign currency exchange service to its customers." Other than that, Khoo said the enterprising foreigners even provided meal delivery service using motorcycles. He added the Myanmar nationals had been running their business in Taman Merdeka at Batu Berendam for a year. "The coffee shops have became a popular hangout for the foreigners and at any given time we can see a large congregation there." Khoo, who also questioned the legitimacy of the business outlets, led the media on a spot-check to the Myanmar-owned shops recently. During the surprise visit, checks showed that the coffee shops were furnished with a kitchen and dining tables with customers having their meals. There was a company registration certificate, issued by the Companies Commission, displayed on the premises wall. However, the address stated in the document referred to an outlet in Cheng. Further queries revealed the workers who delivered meals to nearby factories were riding their motorcyles without a valid license. "The foreigners are also competing with the local business community here to provide services." Khoo added that he would raise the matter with the authorities for further action. |
