Swapping partners

Young Hong Kong couples try out swinging to spice up their lives only to discover that Love Is The Only Answer.

WELL known for movies that deal with romance and relationships, Hong Kong director Patrick Kong (real name Yip Lim Sum) based his latest film on an urban legend widely circulated online.

Titled Love Is The Only Answer, the romantic comedy is a sequel to the successful Marriage With A Liar, starring Chrissie Chau and Him Law. For a fresh spin, Kong settled for the unorthodox pairing of film actor Alex Fong Lik Sun and TV actress Charmaine Sheh. The three spoke to the Malaysian media over the phone from Hong Kong last week.

While the young Hong Kong filmmaker has worked with Fong in earlier productions like Marriage With A Fool (2006), Love Is Not All Around (2007) and L For Love L For Lies (2008), it is his first collaboration with Sheh. He admits to being a fan of the actress as well.

In the movie, romantic clips of Bo (Sheh) and Keung's (Fong) courtship are playing at their wedding reception when a video clip of the groom in bed with another girl is shown, resulting in Bo calling off the marriage.

A year later, they are still on good terms so Keung gets Bo to accompany him to a swingers party. There, they meet Kit (Law Chung Him) and his wife Man Lai (Kelly Fu) and the four develop an intimate relationship.

At another wedding reception, something similar happens to the groom (Jason Chan) and the bride (Rose Chan) when video clips showing their journey of love are interrupted by a flash of another private video clip.

Better known for her roles on television (she has featured in 36 TV series and six movies), Sheh shared that she decided to take on the project because it was based on a true story. "I was really interested. I felt that the leading lady in this story is really courageous and tenacious."

Since the movie outlined the swinging lifestyle and portrayed couples who indulge in swapping partners, did they really accept this?

Director Kong quipped amid laughter all around: "None of us here are married. This is something we have to ask the wife. No use going alone, right? So, I imagine one must get an open-minded wife first."

Sheh, 36, replied: "If I had friends like that, I can accept it. But if my husband is like that, I probably won't be able to."

"I can't accept it either!" Fong, 31, piped up.

"But he's smiling as he said it. Guys would like that. Don't you pretend!" Sheh teased Fong, who countered with: "But, men don't want to swap their wives. Maybe they should bring a fake one." A mischievous mood was apparent as the two took turns to tease each other throughout the interview.

As for their outlook on love, the stars were admittedly more traditional and conservative than the characters they portrayed.

Sheh volunteered to speak first. "Once married, I won't want to get divorced. I hope for a marriage that will last till I grow old and my hair turns white.

Professional swimmer-turned-actor/singer Fong added: "For me, mutual trust is most important."

"People who watch my movies will realise that my outlook on love is rather grey and bleak. So, I hope to find someone out there who will change all that," offered screenwriter-turned-director Kong, 32, who has directed 11 films and written the screenplay for 18.

Kong's other movie this year is Mr And Mrs Single starring Eason Chan, Rene Liu, Harlem Yu and Bai Bing.

So, does that mean the three still hope to find the "one love that will last a lifetime"?

Sheh was quick in her response: "I do hope for that and I think all girls hope for that."

Fong, who has 32 movies and six TV series under his belt, followed with: "I hope for that, too. Getting married once is enough because weddings are very expensive."

Sheh also commented that she shared similar traits with her character Bo, as well as her outlook on love.

"We're both tough and daring. Like the character Bo, who is very faithful to the philandering Keung. Once I've chosen a guy, he is the one for me."

Kong revealed that he wrote some very daring love scenes for Sheh "because he wanted to see if she dared to do them and how far she would go". Kong is satisfied with Sheh's performance, adding: "Maybe next we'll do something even more daring like jump off the 19th floor of a building."

Hearing that, Sheh responded: "I'd like to thank the director for giving me the opportunity to do things that would be impossible for me to do in real life, like making out in a car. That's something that would definitely never happen to me in real life.

"Filming that had not been fun at all. It was very stuffy and cramped in the car and my 'partner' was especially big-sized.

"The director even wanted us to do some 360 degree turns! Filming that was incredibly uncomfortable, and definitely not as nice as it appeared on the screen," Sheh grumbled.

Playing an unfaithful partner like Keung, wouldn't the normally squeaky clean Fong worry that it will sully his reputation?

"I have played many such characters, so most people already have the wrong impression. After getting to know me better, people often tell me that they are surprised to find me to be a nice fellow because they always see me playing such naughty blokes. But it can't be helped.

"Movie making is just acting. Playing baddies is actually good, as they've more fun," shared the cheeky actor, who will next be seen in the movies The Founding Of A Party, Summer Love, Chase Our Love and East Meets West 2011 this year.

Love Is The Only Answer opens in local cinemas this Thursday.
