| MACC investigator slashed by parang-wielding robbers Posted: 21 Jun 2011 06:08 AM PDT SERDANG: A Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) forensic investigator was attacked by six robbers armed with parangs outside his home in Taman Sungai Besi Indah. Moses Lawrence, 36, suffered multiple slash wounds to his hands in the incident that occurred at around 6.30am Tuesday. Serdang deputy OCPD Deputy Supt Lam Chien Fei said that Moses was leaving his house together with his wife and children when the six men attacked him. "The men only managed to slash his hands before he ran into his car to flee the scene," he said adding that his wife and children were in the car when he was attacked. DSP Lam said that police were investigating the case as attempted robbery. "Moses is currently undergoing medical treatment at Hospital Serdang," he said. | 10 Taiwanese nabbed for phone scams deported Posted: 21 Jun 2011 06:07 AM PDT KOTA KINABALU: Ten Taiwanese, who were among 37 people arrested following a police crackdown on an international internet phone scam here, have been deported to their home country. Sabah Police Commissioner Datuk Hamza Taib said Tuesday the 10 were put on a flight to Taiwan on Monday. He said police were awaiting immigration clearance for the deportation of 27 China nationals who were arrested on June 9 together with the Taiwanese following a raid on a condominium here. The foreigners, aged between 23 and 55, used the condominium to make calls to their victims in China, claiming that their relatives had run foul of the law. The syndicate also gave out certain telephone numbers in China that were routed to the syndicates' operations base here or six other Asian countries where they had also set up similar call centres. The syndicate members would then try to intimidate potential victims into forking out money to secure the quick release of their next-of-kin to avoid a legal hassle. Those detained here were part of a coordinated arrest of nearly 600 suspects by police in Taiwan, China, Cambodia, Indonesia and Thailand that saw the crippling of the gang and the arrest of a Taiwanese mastermind in Sabah. | Water cut Wed-Fri to hit a million Klang Valley consumers: Syabas Posted: 21 Jun 2011 05:49 AM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: About a million consumers in the Klang Valley will be affected by a water supply cut from 8am on Wednesday to 8am on Friday when the Sungei Selangor water treatment plant is shut for maintenance and upgrading works. The cut would affect consumers in Kuala Lumpur, Gombak, Petaling and Hulu Selangor, said Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor Sdn Bhd (Syabas) corporate affairs department executive director Abdul Halem Mat Som on Tuesday. The Sungai Selangor water treatment plant Phase 1 (SSP1) in Bukit Badong, Ijok, will be shut for maintenance by Syarikat Pengeluar Air Sungai Selangor Sdn Bhd (Splash) and upgrading work by Syabas, he said. "Splash is fixing the sluice valves and pumps and cleaning the water treatment plant. We are upgrading the water supply systems," he said. "We will have our emergency response plan (ERP) on standby to provide water tankers to consumers. But we advise the public to store water,'' he said. The public can call the Syabas Hotline at 1-800-88-5252 for details on the areas affected as well to get water tanker services. "We have activated a pre-recorded voice mail service to help you,'' he said.
