Young ambassadors go on road trip to promote human rights issues Posted: 24 Jun 2011 06:55 PM PDT JOHOR BARU: A group of young Malaysians have embarked on a road trip to five states around the Peninsular to raise awareness and interest surrounding human rights issues. The 50 member group of Amnesty International Malaysia's (AI-M) youth ambassadors, were chosen earlier this year with a mission to engage other young Malaysians and local youths to have a keen interest in human rights. AI-M executive director Nora Murat said this project was carried out in conjunction with the organisation's 50th anniversary. "This is a form of creative activism, and it is entirely up to the ambassadors themselves to decide what issues they would like to highlight and the activities they want to engage in," she said. For the Johor leg of the road trip, the youth ambassadors chose to focus on the topic of urban poverty, and collaborated with local photography group Lomonatic to take photos of urban poverty in different areas around the state. The group then met at Eats and Beats café at Jalan Tan Hiok Nee here for a screening of the film War Photographer, which was then followed by a sharing session between the ambassadors and members of the public. The group also planned to display the photographs that they took. AI-M youth ambassador Nadia Abu Bakar, 22, said while the road trip was a fun and exciting experience, it was a learning curve and a good opportunity to engage other Malaysian youths regarding human rights issues. "I noticed that youth participation in human rights related activities is quite low which suggests they may be ignorant regarding this issue, thus this is the right avenue for me to rope in more youths and increase their interest in such matters," she said. Another ambassador, Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) undergraduate Faisal Aziz, 23, explained the group sought to send out the message that there were many unfortunate individuals whose rights also needed to be protected. He said being a part of this road trip had been a learning process which made him more sensitive to critical issues concerning basic human rights, and added that the trip received good response and reception from interested members of the public. Fellow UiTM undergraduate and AI-M ambassador Amir Mustapha said being a youth ambassador for AI-M was a platform to take the initiative and actually do something. On using photographs to highlight the plight of urban poverty, Amir commented that photographs could function to raise awareness of the problem, as many people did not actually see or experience it. "The road trip has been an awesome experience and eye-opener for me because it is fun, promotes a meaningful cause and also a great opportunity to meet new friends," he said.
