Preamble for AND1 challenge generates interest among the people Posted: 24 Jun 2011 06:31 AM PDT JUDGING from the off-court interest, it will be equally exciting affair for spectators at the third leg of the AND1 Streetball Challenge at the Summit USJ Subang on Sunday. From the coaching clinic held at the Kota Kemuning Oncidium outdoor basketball court on Tuesday, two young amateur photographers also had the chance to brush up on their photography skills. Classmates Nicholas Lee Ziteng and Tan Kah Zhen, 15, from SMK Kota Kemuning turned up to take shots of their schoolmates going through the paces under former international Tan Kee Hian. "Our friends told us about the programme. "I have been taking pictures for over a year and wanted to share my experience with my friend (Kah Zhen), who has just picked up the hobby," said Nicholas. At the coaching clinic, the experienced trainer Kee Hian included several exercises for the participants to move the ball around as warm-up drills before increasing the tempo incorporating passing, shooting and dribbling techniques. For their good showing in the fun-filled games, the participants also went home with goodies from the challenge's organisers. Almost 30 youngsters including SMK Kota Kemuning students and Kota Kemuning Basketball Academy trainees under the care of former national junior boys' cager Ray Yio joined the session that went on for over an hour. "We started the training programmes for the youngsters here last October. "Besides the three sessions on weekends, we have lined up a practice session for them on every Tuesday. Currently, we have about 80 trainees aged between nine and 18," added Ray, who was part of the national university team finishing as runners-up at the Asean University Games last year. Although the hoop at one end of the court came down recently, it did not dampen the participants' spirit from having a ball at their favourite hang out. "It was broken several months ago. After it was fixed, we saw it giving way before it dropped again because the hoop was not secured properly on the board," said the 25-year-old Ray, who is a final year business degree student at Taylor's University. On the eve of the closing date, the organisers have received 140 entries to feature in five — boys' Under-13, Under-15, Under-18, Under-21 and girls' Under-18 — categories and they were hopeful of reaching the maximum of 200 teams. After having a taste of the fresh three-on-three format at the season opening leg at Bandar Bukit Tinggi in Klang, 15-year-old Justin Teo said he prefers the newly introduced system with a basket at both ends on a bigger court because it has reduced to chances of players with better physique to pounce and dominate under the previous single basket setting. Meanwhile, another SMK Kota Kemuning student Muges Naidu is considering to make his debut in the challenge this year. "I have been playing basketball for the past three years. I have attended several coaching clinics because I want to learn more and improve on my skills. "I have not competed in the streetball challenge and it will be great to gain exposure competing in the event with my neighbourhood friends," said the 15-year-old lad from Bukit Rimau.
