Bright lights of the NBT Independent Music Showcase.
NOTHING like the NBT Independent Music Showcase series to wind down the weekend. The latest edition, on Feb 9 at No Black Tie, features a good mix – an established name like Reza Salleh, newcomer talent Hameer Zawawi and the woman of contrasts Anna Chong, who is a blur of shy murmurs and intense emotion on stage.
As an outsider from the homegrown Chinese music scene, Chong is pushing her music to a broader audience. Her Jeff Buckley-meets-Fiona Apple creative approach has won over new fans.
Last April, she also boosted her mainstream exposure with a set at the Kakiseni Creative Arts Festival while also playing the Moonshine 10th Anniversary gig last November.
A few weeks ago, Chong sold out the weekend at the Damansara Performing Arts Centre, doing a showcase of her own material. She will be backed by her own band on Feb 9.
Newcomer talent Hameer Zawawi has a disarmingly loose approach to live performance, which adds to his raw charm.
Elsewhere, Hameer is the younger brother of singer-songwriter Rendra Zawawi and the son of another troubadour from the old guard, Dr Wan Zawawi.
As he impresses with each passing indie gig, Hameer is also developing into a very interesting live act. The lad also has recording on his mind. He just had a pre-order/fundraising gig last week to help finance the printing of his debut EP. Hameer will be playing in a trio setting for the upcoming NBT Independent Music Showcase.
Reza Salleh, singer-songwriter, who has established himself as a recording artiste as well as the driving force behind a handful of independent showcase nights.
Reza Salleh, who is also the organiser of this gig series, will also take the stage on Feb 9.
"For this show series, I'm looking to bring back the independent showcase spirit to NBT and to position this as a quality showcase. Each acts plays 45 minutes each and will play mainly originals, with a cover or two thrown into the mix," said Reza, who is the founder of the Moonshine live series in the Klang Valley.
On the subject of new material, Reza mentions that he has put serious thought in scaling back his tours (especially Japan) and delegating the Moonshine duties to others. He noted that a few new tunes are in the bag and he is looking to book studio time for his second album soon. Reza's recorded output includes Smoke City EP (2007) and his debut album Realize (2010).
NBT Independent Music Showcase featuring Reza Salleh, Anna Chong and Hameer Zawawi starts at 9pm on Feb 9. Venue is No Black Tie, 17 Jalan Mesui, off Jalan Nagasari in Kuala Lumpur. Admission is RM40. For bookings, call 03-2142 3737.
