Nestle contest makes dreams come true

Posted: 16 Jan 2014 03:00 AM PST

Winners of the Nestle NAN Grow 3 Super Kids talent recruitment drive had a blast trying out their dream jobs.

"WHEN I grow up, I want to be a pilot, no, a chef, no, hold on ... an artist!"

The list of dreams goes on. From aspiring to be an astronaut who embarks on space travel to a doctor who saves lives, children have high ambitions.

As children, we have all dreamt of having our dream job come true. That became a reality for six adventurous and passionate children who were selected to be part of the Nestle NAN Grow 3 Super Kids talent recruitment drive.

The contest aims to give children opportunities to experience their dream jobs first hand. There were three programmes: an exciting cookout session with a chef from Wondermama restaurant in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur, a chance to unleash their creativity with renowned artist Ernest Zacharevic and a real-life pilot briefing and aircraft cockpit tour with Firefly Airlines.

These are the experiences of the children who won the opportunities to try out their dream jobs.

Blank canvas

An afternoon at the Art Square Gallery in Bangsar with street artist Ernest Zacharevic turned out to be eye opening for six-year-old girls Nurzulaikha Amni Suhasri and Koo Min Qi.

Zacharevic urged his young protégés to paint anything they wanted on blank canvases without telling them he'd make them swap and finish each other's paintings - not once, but three times. At the end of the day, Ernest presented a Super Kids certificate and gave away one of his own paintings to the lucky winners.

Nurzulaikha's mother, Afifah Mohd Aisha Nuddin said the experience offered her daughter a different perspective to the world of art.

She believes in Nurzulaikha's talent and hopes her daughter will see Zacharevic as a role model.

"Aspirations are the crux of child development and I am 100% behind Nurzulaikha and I want her to follow her heart; wherever that may lead her".

Soaring high

Earlier this month, Umar Husayn Hamsafar and Dhev Aditya Doshi, aged six and five respectively, reported as pilots in-training at Firefly Airlines at the Sultan Abdul Aziz Shah Airport in Subang, Selangor.

Umar and Dhev were selected for their relevant flight experiences. Umar noted in his application that he had logged numerous hours 'making airplane sounds' and still vividly remembers his last flight simulation experience.

Umar's mother, Zety Marlia Zainal Abiden, said Umar used to hold back from engaging in activities due to his low self-esteem. "It took us a while, but through positive words and encouragement, we are finally seeing great improvements in Umar's confidence. He is no longer afraid and has become brave when facing his fears.

"He's more confident when he acts like a pilot".

Dhev was selected due to his extensive knowledge of countries and capitals of the world. "Previously, Dhev wished to become a pirate so he could have all the treasures in the world whereas now, he hopes to be a pilot so he can see the world and then set course for Mars!" said Dhev's mother Vandana.

Little chefs

On the other side of Bangsar, four year-old girls Nur Aleesya Naurah Azazam and Chloe Tan Yi Rou donned their aprons and set about preparing a sumptuous breakfast with the chefs of Wondermama Restaurant and Café.

"It really was a special day for our daughter. At home, she helps her mother prepare the food but at Wondermama today she selected, prepared and cooked a dish herself.

"It was definitely worth her waking up at the crack of dawn this morning. Today, I could see that Chloe has grown in confidence; it's great to see," said Chloe's father Julian Tan.
