Henry Butcher's upcoming Malaysian & South-East Asian Art auction offers a diverse spread.

The late Datuk Ibrahim Hussein is regarded as one of the most decorated Malaysian artists – his iconic work recognisable on the global stage and cherished in his homeland. But Ibrahim, more affectionately known as Ib, was also once a young and experimental artist. At the upcoming Henry Butcher Malaysian & South-East Asian Art auction on Nov 3 at the Sime Darby Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur, one of his early pieces Paul from 1968 will go under the hammer.

Whether you are a Fab Four fan or not, Paul, which is a rare piece conceived during Ib's experimental "printage" phase in New York, is worth an investigation.

A full public viewing of the pieces on parade at the Henry Butcher Malaysian & South-East Asian Art auction is now running at the White Box in Publika, Kuala Lumpur till Nov 2.

Two works from the late China-born, Malaysia-based artist Huang Yao, who was honoured at the well-received Huang Yao: The Remarkable Guest Of Malaya exhibition at the National Visual Arts Gallery earlier this year, will also be part of the upcoming auction.

Huang Yao's Planting Paddy After The Rain (1979) and Welcoming Friends With Tea (1980) represents his work with ink and colour on rice paper.

Elsewhere, there is no shortage of homegrown names to turn the heads. From the Matahati stable, there is Hamir Soib @ Mohamed's A Board Game (2007), which is epic oil on canvas work brimming with apocalyptic menace, while Khairul Azmir Shoib aka Meme's fantasy-laden The Fallen (2011) is side of Malaysian contemporary art on the rise.

A total of 113 lots by 80 artists – local and international – will be part of the high-profile auction. At the preview display, art enthusiasts – casual or serious – can glimpse works from Datuk Chuah Thean Teng (his batik art gems), Choong Kam Kow, Chen Wen Hsi, Jolly Koh, Lee Cheng Yong, Yusof Ghani, Jalaini Abu Hassan, H.H. Lim, Abdul Latif Mohidin and more.

Pieces from regional notables like Natee Utarit, Eko Nugroho, Gerald Pieter Adolfs, A.D. Pirous, Arie Smit and Lucien Frits Ohl are also bound to catch the eye at the auction preview.

>> Henry Butcher Malaysian & South-East Asian Art Auction runs at Sime Darby Convention Centre, Kuala Lumpur on Nov 3 at 1pm. Preview at the White Box Publika Level G2-01, Block A5 Dutamas, 1 Jalan Dutamas 1, Kuala Lumpur till Nov 2.
