Increase subsidised diesel quota, bus operators tell Government Posted: PETALING JAYA: The Pan Malaysian Bus Operators Association wants the Government to increase the quota of subsidised diesel for stage and express buses. The amount that bus operators are now seeking is more than double what they are currently receiving. Association president Datuk Ashfar Ali said it had written to the Finance and Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism ministries and the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) on Friday after the 20-sen hike in the price of diesel. At present, operators are given a quota of 1,400 litres of diesel per month for a stage bus and 2,800 litres for an express bus. The quota price is now RM1.68 a litre. Bus operators have to pay the new pump price of RM2 per litre if they exceed their monthly quota. "We are asking the Government to increase the diesel quota for stage coaches to 3,000 litres a month and 6,000 litres for express buses," said Ashfar. The association, which has 130 members nationwide, is also lobbying the Government to extend the Interim Stage Bus Fund, introduced in December 2011 to help cash-strapped bus operators. "The 400mil allocated for the fund is running out. We hope the Government will top up the fund to continue to assist struggling operators," he said. In Kluang, acting Transport Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein said his ministry and SPAD were taking a closer look at the plight of bus operators and public transport companies following the increase in diesel price. Speaking to reporters after attending a Merdeka Raya open house yesterday, Hishammuddin said the authorities were prepared to meet with the operators and companies to look for workable solutions to their grouses. The Government was also considering helping the operators and companies using the savings from the reduction of fuel subsidies if they could come up with justifiable reasons. "We know that before the Government decided to reduce the subsidies, some companies have already increased their fares," he added. |

Khairul Anuar, who is planning to move to his new home in Seberang Jaya with his family, was looking for kitchen ware and home appliances. "I hope to get some good bargains like an oven and a built-in stove for my new home," he added. |
Two Singaporeans drown in Tioman Posted: ROMPIN: Two Singaporeans – a diving instructor and his student – drowned in Pantai Air Batang, Tioman, in the latest in a series of drowning incidents involving foreigners in this popular tourist destination. The men – Lee Yong Yeow, 48, and Tan Sean Hen, 35, – were brought to shore by other divers after the Saturday noon incident. Deputy OCPD Asst Supt Zainul Mujahidin Mat Yudin said cardiopulmonary resuscitation was performed on the victims but they were pale and not breathing. "Initial investigations showed both victims and a woman were in a group diving in the site about 25m from the shores. "One of them was a diving instructor and the other his student," he said, adding that the woman spotted the two men in difficulties and quickly waved frantically for help. ASP Zainul Mujahidin said a group of other divers rushed to help and managed to get the men out of the water. However, both victims were confirmed dead. Last month, a couple from Syria lost their eight-year-old in Pulau Salang after the child went for a swim without their knowledge. Passers-by spotted the remains of Saad Abdul Karim Mohd Altayasinah floating in the water before alerting the authorities. |
