| Return of qawwali singer Rahat Posted: Pakistani qawwali singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan will perform in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 6. Pakistani qawwali singer Rahat Fateh Ali Khan returns to Kuala Lumpur for a concert at Putra International Convention Centre in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 6. He played in Kuala Lumpur last year to an enthusiastic audience. And it is heartening that he has kept true to his roots – and continues to make music his mission in life. "When you have a mentor like Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, worldly aspects do not intervene in our life. For me, it is about soulful music, be it Sufi, qawwali and even my songs in Bollywood are based on this," said Rahat about the spirituality in his music in a recent interview with a British music website. Rahat may be the nephew of the late, great Pakistani musician Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (who died in 1997), son of Ustad Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan and also the grandson of legendary qawwali singer Fateh Ali Khan, but he has become his own voice in the qawwali music circles. Qawwali is the impassioned, spiritual South Asian vocal style derived from ancient Sufi religious poets, with accompaniment by harmonium, tabla drums and back-up singers. The younger Khan toured and performed with his uncle from 1985 to 1997, having trained with him since age three. Now 39, Rahat, who has released solo albums in his native Pakistan, while breaking into Bollywood, has also become a South Asian star with international prominence. Rahat released his first US recording – an eponymous American/Legacy set in 1997. He has also worked on Hollywood movie soundtracks like The Four Feathers and Apocalypto. Rahat's upcoming concert, presented by Trish Events comes in the wake of a British tour that saw him celebrating 100 years of Bollywood. Tickets are available through www.ticketpro.com.my. |
