Back with a bang

A 12-year hiatus did nothing to diminish the pomp and glamour of the AIM Chinese Awards 2013, which went on with predictable style.

AIM Chinese Awards finally returned with a big bang at Plenary Hall, Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre on Saturday night, after a 12-year-long hiatus from the scene. Also known as Anugerah Industri Muzik (AIM) Cina, the AIM Chinese Awards 2013 was brought back by the Recording Industry Association of Malaysia (RIM), with the support of the Ministry Of Tourism and Culture (previously known as the Ministry Of Information, Communication and Culture).

Held only twice previously (in 1999 and 2001), AIM Chinese awards makes its third appearance this year as a platform to cater to the growing Chinese music industry, and also to encourage local talent to produce good quality music for the Chinese speaking community in Malaysia.

The trio of emcees for the night – Wen Kang, Jeff Chin and Danielle Dai – rolled out a night of glitz and glamour as they, too, grabbed attention with their flamboyant outfits and cheeky banter.

Dubbed the local version of the Grammys, the awards ceremony kicked off with RIM Chairman Norman Abdul Halim presenting the Outstanding Contribution Award to veteran musician Eric Moo. The silver-haired singer-songwriter had just opened the show by taking the audience on a trip down memory lane with three of his most famous pop hits: Na Yi Duan Ri Zi (Those Days), Ni Shi Wo De Wei Yi (You Are My One And Only), and Tai Sha (Too Foolish).

The biggest winner of the night was clearly prolific producer-songwriter Percy Phang, who bagged five awards (out of the eight he was nominated for), including Best Song producer (Love In Heart by Fish Leong), Best Composer (Gems Of Wisdom by ZChen), Best Lyricist (Regret Meeting You Too Early by ZChen), Best Song (Love In Heart by Fish Leong) and Best Album (In Love With ... by ZChen).

Prince of R&B ZChen grabbed the Best Male Vocal Performance and Best Album Awards for his album and title song, In Love With ... while his cousin, the Queen of Mandopop Ballads, Fish Leong (who could not attend) won for Best Female Vocal Performance and Best Song for her album and title song, Love In Heart.

Bell Yu Tian, who was the most nominated with 10 nods, went home with Best New Artiste-Gold and Best Music Video Awards for her album 21st December, Sunny.

One of the highlights of the night, musician-turned-moviemaker Aniu (Tan Kheng Seong) was a livewire as he channelled his comical side to liven up the night by teasing the audience with his hilariously distinctive Manglish speech, while jointly presenting the awards for Best Dialect Song and Best Drama/Movie Theme Song with Joyce Lim (also known as Tongxin).

Among the artistes who performed on the night were Best New Artiste Silver Award winner Jess Lee (also Best Female Vocal Performance nominee), VChuan (Best Composer, Best Song Producer, Best Male Vocal Performance and Best Song nominee), Taiwan-based Freya Lin (Best Female Vocal Performance nominee) as well as newly-formed local indie band Platform 11 (Best Album nominee).

Newcomers Bell, Kopi Lim, Peace Teo and Geraldine Gan took to the stage to present a tribute segment, in honour of popular 80s singer Liew Chiou Yi (who died of cancer in March, aged 56) and Nanyang Siang Pau assistant editor-in-chief and award-winning producer-songwriter Cheah Kee Ling (who died of a heart attack in January at age of 50).

Other guest performers included Chng Shyue Chung, Evon Low, Angel Lee, KC Phang, Yang Wei Han, Chew Paul Wah, Lenny Ooi, Wilson Tin, Eric Lim, Meeia Foo, Tedd Chan, Karen Kong and boyband BM Boys, who did an upbeat medley of 18 popular Chinese songs.

As the closing act, Japanese rock band HAKU kept the audience glued to their seats for a rocking finale as they belted out their hits Hikari (Light) and Everything But The Love.

A total of 19 awards were presented in 17 categories, judged by a panel comprising 25 industry professionals, including editors, reporters, photographers, radio deejays, producers, singers, lyricists, songwriters and fellow musicians.
