Black 505: Police warn public against participation in rally Posted: 21 Jun 2013 07:34 AM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: Police have advised members of the public not to participate in the Black 505 rally Saturday, claiming the organisers deliberately want to see clashes between the authorities and rally participants, according to a Bernama report. Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Mohmad Salleh said according to information based on a tip-off, the organisers had told protesters to provoke the authorities tasked to control the crowd at Padang Merbok, here and seven other locations in the city. "The provocation is intended to create police anger at the demonstrators and thus create chaos at these places," he said in a statement here Friday. He said that according to the tip-off, the organisers were also expected to spark chaos in Kuala Lumpur, in order to show to the world the "violence" caused by authorities. Mohmad also stressed that the rally was against the law because it was in conflict with the Peaceful Assembly Act 2012. He said the police would not hesitate to take stern action against any person who willfully violated the act and any other law enshrined in the constitution. Meanwhile, Black 505 organisers have refuted claims by the police that they were out to stir trouble. PKR vice-president Tian Chua said it was for "the majority of voters" to protest alleged fraud during GE13. "We are not out to cause trouble or overthrow the government. We want a better electoral system and for the Election Commissoners to step down," he said. Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) chairman Badrul Hisham Shaharin, or popularly known as Chegubard, said the aim of the rally was not to topple the administration. "We are not saying Najib should step down and Anwar be Prime Minister. We just want an EC that has values, he said. Selangor PAS deputy commissioner Khalid Samad said staging the rally was the responsibility of the majority against alleged corruption. "In PAS we hold on to our principles. If we see evil or untruths in our midst, it is our responsibility to change that if we can. "The 2013 elections prove that Pakatan has the majority (vote) and are capable of making the change. We will not stand for it (untruths) any longer," he said. Related Stories: |
Water transport system among netizens' suggestions to beat Klang Valley traffic woes Posted: 21 Jun 2013 07:56 AM PDT PETALING JAYA: Allowing fewer private vehicles on the road, providing more buses and even upgrading the Gombak-Klang river to accommodate water transport these were among the suggestions from netizens to The Star Online's public transport trek in the Klang Valley on Friday. The Star Online sent three reporters to various destinations in Klang Valley, including Putrajaya, Zoo Negara and Subang Jaya. They were required to use public transportation such as buses and trains to get to their respective destinations from their homes. They were not allowed to use taxis. Netizens provided suggestions via the #MyJalan that entered the Malaysian trends list on Twitter. @azreen6845 tweeted that the Government should limit the number of cars on the road, especially in the city, build more bus lanes in the city and expand the monorail stations. @bungarumput, who uses public transport, tweeted that the core issue was not the lack of buses but whether people were willing to travel by bus. In another tweet, the tweeter said that if the majority of people used public transport, buses might be more frequent and there would be better service overall. @KlangCity tweeted that the MRT should be expanded into Klang as this would give the public more transport options for those commuting to work. @TzYoong had a simple request and asked for more buses that were on schedule. @KavinashGopal toped that the Rapid BET buses provided service all the time and not only during the rush hours. @ArisHushaini tweeted "if only there is some initiative to upgrade Gombak-Klang river so we can accommodate water taxis just like Venice." @AlanDompat tweeted "Our bus drivers need to be trained." Black 505: Supporters stage final flash mob in city ahead of gathering Posted: 21 Jun 2013 07:21 AM PDT KUALA LUMPUR: Black 505 supporters staged a final flash mob in the city Friday to drum up support ahead of the Saturday rally in Padang Merbok. In contrast to previous flash mobs, the group of nine supporters from Solidariti Anak Muda Malaysia (SAMM) and Solidariti Mahasiswa Malaysia (SMM) kept it low key and walked around the city to promote their cause. They held up placards that read "We are Malaysians, We are not terrorists" and "Keep Calm and Continue Democracy", among others. The demonstration began at around 6pm at the Sogo shopping complex along Jalan Raja Laut before proceeding to the Masjid Jamek LRT station, UTC Pudu Sentral and Petaling Street before ending at KL/Selangor Chinese Assembly Hall. SAMM Federal Territories coordinator Shariful Azmir Mustafa said the flash mob was planned at the last minute to urge people to attend tomorrow's rally. No police officers were seen as the group made their way around the city. The rally is to protest alleged claims of electoral fraud and irregularities during GE13. The rally has been deemed illegal under the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012 after organisers failed to obtain approval for the use of Padang Merbok from Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL). KL mayor Datuk Ahmad Phesal Talib voiced reservations of holding the rally in an open area and recommended organisers to stage the rally in a stadium. He also said that the field had been booked on June 23 by the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) to hold a charity run and would need Padang Merbok the day before for logistics. The OCM has since postponed their event due to the worsening haze situation. Related Stories: |
