JOHOR BARU: The renovation works being carried out at Istana Besar and Istana Bukit Serene here is on schedule and should be completed by this December for the coronation ceremony of Johor Ruler Sultan Ibrahim ibni Sultan Iskandar next year.

State public works exco Datuk Hasni Mohammad said that the works at both palaces are progressing and renovations should finish within the next six months.

He also said that Sultan Ibrahim's coronation ceremony would be a historic event not only in Johor but also in the country.

Hasni pointed out that the last coronation ceremony held was during the reign of Almarhum Sultan Ismail Ibni Almarhum Sultan Ibrahim.

Sultan Ismail was crowned at Istana Besar on Feb 10, 1960, and was the last Johor Sultan to be officially crowned.

"The renovation works at Istana Besar is already more than 60% completed while Istana Serene is about 40% done.

"Renovations at both palaces started in Nov last year where the state Public Works Department carried out expansion including touch up works," he said.

Hasni said this when met after attending the department's excellence award ceremony held here on June 13.

Sultan Abu Bakar built the Istana Besar in 1866 and the palace overlooks the Straits of Johor.

The palace's most distinctive feature is its Anglo-Malay architecture, which is characterised by its dome, contrasted with its blue roof.

Located in the heart of the city centre, Istana Besar was also the location for Umno first general assembly on May 11, 1946.
