Posted: 15 Jun 2013 06:28 AM PDT MALACCA: The state government is of the believe that there are trillion ringgit worth of treasures resting off the coast along the Malacca's shoreline but wants nautical archaeologists to authenticate the accounts of slew of divers claiming they have sighted these relics before embarking on salvaging exercise. Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron said the purported sightings still remains anecdotal although there were myriad of such purported sightings. "We are not discounting the possibility that our shoreline is a treasure vault but there should be some sort of research or recommendation from deep-sea recovery companies through ultrasonic scanning," he said after launching two new models — the Explorer Voyager EV488FC and Explorer Catamaran CAT 330 FC - manufactured by local boat-maker Explorer Group of Companies at Klebang here, yesterday. He said the proposal made by his predecessor Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam that the state was willing to share quantum of the yielded artifacts with the deep sea recovery companies. Idris revealed that the state government was also willing to grant immediate approval if such companies are willing to salvage these underwater treasures. "But there should be a research first, there was also rumours that Malacca River has thousands of coins buried under its riverbed. "These artifacts are lying in our water hence we have right to salvage it but we need the expertise and the funds to do so," he said. The Star had previously reported that dozens of shipwrecks found along the coastline of the state, which may yield artefacts worth billions of ringgit. The shipwrecks, some of which were 500 years old, were discovered during a survey conducted by the National Heritage Department and Royal Malaysian Navy in 2009. Some of these vessels could be from the time of the Malacca Sultanate and some from the period between 1600 and 1800. The shipwrecks were located on the seabed some 100m from the surface. Authorities believed the shipwrecks could include Raja Haji and Bulan Linggi, two vessels used by the Malay rulers between 1600 and 1650. Most of these sunken ships were probably merchant ships on their way to Malacca before they sank. It was also reported that the cost of salvaging one of these ships could cost up to RM3mil. The area with shipwrecks had been also identified as a potential National Heritage site. In 2012, an archaeologist diver from Kuala Lumpur claimed that he discovered a sunken Dutch merchant vessel containing some RM500mil worth of cultural relics at a depth of about 27 meters and some three nautical miles off Pulau Besar here. Archaeologist diver who identified himself as David claimed that he had discovered the remains of a sunken Dutch merchant vessel containing some RM500mil worth of cultural relics. The wooden galleon presumed to have sunk with loads of treasures about 400 years ago and number of relics that were believed to be still preserved, among others, were ceramics, old coins, beads, glass and gold bars. |
