Posted: 09 Jun 2013 02:12 AM PDT Wake up to an island of art with the George Town Festival. THERE are three simple letters you need to remember if you are heading over to Penang this month – GTF. Not the Internet slang, mind you. We are talking about the George Town Festival, and it is a must-visit for everyone. Apart from music, theatre, opera and film, the month-long festival, first introduced in 2010, also plays host to an extravaganza of art that will appeal to your various senses and allow you to experience the Unesco Heritage Site like never before. Here are some art exhibitions dotted across several locations on the island that you can check out at the George Town Festival: Strange Paradise Venue: Art Gallery, China House Date: Daily till July 7 Time: 9am to 12am Watch out for the old, the new and the extraordinary by Malaysian artist Anurendra Jegadeva. For this exhibition, he revisits Portrait Of My Mother As The Queen, An Alphabet For The Middle-aged, Middle Classes and This Is Where We Live, while introducing 10 new works and his collaboration with writer Rahel Joseph. It will definitely be a whimsical paradise for the eyes. Theatre Of Ships Venue: MPPP Town Hall Date: Daily till July 7 Time: All hours The visionary Indonesian artist, Joko Avianto will showcase his magnificent bamboo sculptures which are created through his one-of-a-kind technique to shape the bamboos without splitting them into parts. The exhibition, with its finesse and theatricality, will take visitors back in time to celebrate the island's identity and its glorious era as a maritime trading hub. It's a (more rewarding) history lesson for all ages. A Town Called George Venue: Victory Annexe Lobby, E&O Hotel Date: Daily till July 7 Time: Hotel hours Marie Dargent is well known for delivering art through intricate processes, more so with the old-school method of lithography that involves hand-printing on a stone lithographic press. Visitors are promised an unique portrayal of George Town from the eyes and mind of the French-born artist. Legend of Contemporary Liuli Art Venue: Heritage Wing Lobby, E&O Hotel Date: Daily till June 16 Time: Hotel hours For those who appreciate the classical aesthetics of glass sculpture, perhaps this joint exhibition between proudly acclaimed liuli artists Loretta H. Yang and Chang Yi is your sort of thing. Visitors can look forward to graceful liuli works. The art of liuli holds years of history, dating back to the 11th century BC when its first appearance was made. Now, it sits well in the contemporary art arena thanks to the dedication of its practitioners. Art@Whiteaways Venue: Whiteaways Arcade Date: Daily till July 7 Time: 11am to 6pm Malaysians Ahmad Zakii Anwar, Jalaini Abu Hassan, Chong Siew Ying, Kow Leong Kiang, Rebecca Wilkinson and Chan Kok Hooi will have their works featured in the highly renowned art collector, Valentine Willie's exhibition. Art@Whiteaways highlights the many closer-to-home issues in an array of tones and moods. Also worth your visit is Agus Baqul Purnomo, an Indonesian painter who fearlessly incorporates Islamic calligraphy (khat) into graffiti. Domestic Evolution Venue: Along Victoria Street Date: Daily till June 30 Time: All hours They say that a chair is just a chair, but Tim Craker begs to differ. He has taken simple domestic items out of their boring day-to-day duties and ingeniously transformed them into art. Domestic Evolution is guaranteed to be fun for the whole family. Romancing Melaka Venue: The Canteen Bar, China House Date: Daily till July 31 Time: 9am to 12am We all know about the great tales of Melaka, and Daniel Brinsmead is giving us his take through his paintings by combining what he has heard with experiences of his own and a hint of other cultures.
