GE13: Taking a much needed break

JOHOR BARU: Now that the elections are over, candidates from both sides of the political divide are hoping to unwind before assuming their duties as elected representatives.

Some are hoping to catch up with some sleep while others are planning to catch up with friends, spend quality time with their family or even replying calls and messages to well wishes.

Tebrau parliamentary seat winner, Khoo Soo Seang said he would rest and catch up with his online friends.

"I am usually very active on Facebook and Twitter and I hope to catch up once polling is done," he said.

Khoo added that he usually kept abreast on local issues via social media and even uses the platform to publish his own poetry.

"I like writing Chinese poetry and I usually publish my pieces on Facebook," he said adding that he would continue using the social media to communicate with his constituents and address their problems.

Pasir Gudang Barisan division chief Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin, who is tipped to be the next Johor Mentri Besar, said that he was looking forward to spending some quality time with his family at home.

Khaled, who won the Permas state seat, added that like any other candidate, he too has been busy attending various programs during the campaigning period.

Skudai incumbent Dr Boo Cheng Hou from DAP said that he was planning to relax on Monday to catch up on some sleep as since nomination, he has only been sleeping between four to five hours daily.

"I have been campaigning all over the state for Pakatan Rakyat and need a day to really rest and unwind," he said, adding that he also hoped to spend the day eating his favourite chocolate ice-cream to sooth his throat after all the ceramah's for the past two weeks.

However some assemblymen have already stated their work due to requests from their constituents.

Semarang assemblyman Datuk Samsol Bari Jamali, he said he visited two of his constituents in Kg Haji Talib whose house was damaged in a storm on Sunday.

Gambir assemblyman M.Asojan, his first task was to help settle a problem at Sk Parit Kassan in Bukit Gambir.

"The headmaster called me early in the morning saying that the school canteen could not be operated as the school, which was used as a polling station was in a mess.

"I managed to get my assistants to buy buns and packet drinks for all the 250 students to have their recess at 10.15am," he said, adding that he too has received calls about flash floods in Kg Sengkang in Batu 20.

"I also have been busy replying SMS and calls from the dozens of well wishers," he said, adding that he would visit a collapsed embankment in Kg Melepang Hang Tuah.

GE13: Tears of joy after Normala’s close win

PASIR GUDANG: It was a rollercoaster ride that ended with tears of joy Normala Abdul Sani who won the Pasir Gudang parliamentary seat by a slim majority of 935.

Normala, a new face in the polls, was literally on the edge of her seat while she had anxiously waited for the votes to be tabulated at the counting centre.

Just as the last two channels were being counted, Normala was overwhelmed with emotion and broke down in tears.

Moments later, the large screens at the counting center changed and Normala's supporters let out cries of joy when she defeated PKR candidate Dr Ahmad Faidhi Saidi.

"It was such a close battle and I am going to do my best to see to the needs of the people in Pasir Gudang," she said after being calmed down by supporters and family members.

Normala said that the first thing she hoped to do was to perform thanksgiving prayers to celebrate her win.

"After that, I will be going down to meet the voters especially in areas which I did not garner enough support.

"We will find out why we didn't get support in certain areas in Pasir Gudang and we will work hard to change the mindset of the people there," she said while answering congratulatory messages and calls.

Another new face, 27-year-old Liow Cai Tung from DAP also came out tops in a three cornered fight between Barisan Nasional's Tan Cher Puk and independent candidate Elwin Hong.

Liow, who had a smile plastered to her face said that she was tired but was happy that the people have allowed her an opportunity to represent them.

"I am exhausted but overjoyed at the same time. It is so hard to describe the mixed emotions that I am feeling but I promise the people in Johor Jaya that I will work hard for them," she said.

Liow garnered some 22,879 votes, winning by a majority of 1,460.

The other state seat of Permas which falls within the Pasir Gudang parliamentary constituency went to former Pasir Gudang MP Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin.

Mohamed Khaled defeated Syed Othman Abdullah (PAS) by a majority of 5,752 votes.

In Kulai, Teo Nie Ching (DAP) who won the seat said despite the large majority, victory was a solemn affair.

"This is because we are still far from our journey to change the government because we did not win a few crucial seats including as Bentong," she said.

Teo defeated Barisan Nasional's Tay Chin Hein with a huge majority of 13,450.

She garnered 43,338 votes compared with Barisan Nasional's Tay Chin Hein who raked in 29,888 votes and independent K. Surinderan who recorded 238 votes.

The constituency recorded 89.3 per cent of voters and 1,432 spoilt votes.

State seat Bukit Permai went to Barisan's Ali Mazat Salleh (11,236) against PAS' Mazlan Aliman (7,867), PKR's Jimmy Puah bagged the Bukit Batu state seat with 11,676 over Barisan's Cheong Chin Liang (7,661) and independent Surinderan (177).

While Senai was won by DAP's Wong Shu Qi (23,110) against Barisan's Tang Nai Soon (11,883).

GE13: Leaders, candidates cast their votes and show support to their parties

KUANTAN: Polling at one of the hot parliamentary seats in Pahang proceeded smoothly with both sides of the divide up early to cast their votes.

Its incumbent Fuziah Salleh arrived at about 8.30am in SM Tok Sira accompanied by her husband and several aides to cast their votes.

Her opponent Barisan Nasional's Datuk Mohamed Suffian Awang cast his vote in SK Galing at 9am, followed by visits to several other polling centres to observe the voting process.

Pahang Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation chairman Datuk Johny Ch'ng Ewe Gee and his wife were the earliest to arrive at the gates of SM Tanah Putih at 6.45am.

The couple were the first voters at the centre and made no attempt to hide their undivided support to the ruling Barisan coalition.

Ch'ng even organised a gathering with old folks in Wisma MCA on Labour Day to shore up support for Mohamed Suffian and Barisan's Teruntum candidate and incumbent Datuk Chang Hong Seong.

"We support the ruling Government as Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has done a good job and should be given another term in office," he said.

Chang turned up with his wife Datin Koo Mui Ling at SK Methodist to cast his vote at 9.15am.

The couple waited in line with other voters in a long queue before emerging from the polling station one hour later with indellible ink painted on his index finger.

He was seen assisting old folks and the illiterate to check their particulars with Election Commission staff.

Chang's opponent Sim Chon Siang of PKR cast his vote at 9am in SK Seri Teruntum.

At the Pahang Youth and Sports Complex, Barisan's candidate Datuk Pang Tsu Ming was accompanied by his wife to cast his vote at 9am.

The incumbent Semambu assemblyman took time to shake hands with the people, including a vocal critic of the Lynas plant - Save Malaysia Stop Lynas chairman Tan Bun Teet.

A long queue of people started lining up the road leading into the complex from 7am.

The polling stations closed at 5pm with no untoward incidents.

Kuantan OCPD Asst Comm Mohd Jasmani Yusoff was also seen making his rounds to ensure that the voting process went smoothly.
