GE13: Liow: Put country first

Posted: 04 May 2013 03:02 AM PDT

TEMERLOH: Voters should think of the larger interest of the nation before casting their votes tomorrow, MCA deputy president Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said.

Liow said the country could only enjoy progress, growth and prosperity for all citizens under a united and stable Government.

"I am pleading to the voters to think wisely, against being emotional and not get carried away with slogans urging for change.

"Under the Barisan Nasional, the welfare of all is taken care of and we would continue to do our best for the country and its people," he told Star Metro after chairing a meeting with Temerloh MCA divisional leaders near here.

Also present was Barisan's candidate for Mentakab state seat Datuk Chuah Boon Seong, who will be facing Tengku Zulpuri Shah Raja Puji of the DAP in a straight fight.

Liow, who is also the Pahang MCA chairman, said he had gone to all constituencies contested by MCA to offer moral support.

He said MCA would be contesting two parliamentary - Bentong and Raub - and eight state seats in this elections.

The state seats are Cheka, Tras, Damak, Semambu, Teruntum, Mentakab, Bilut and Ketari.

Liow said with the exception of Tras, he was confident all the seven state seats could be retained by MCA candidates.

"I do not want to be over-confident but we have done our best to project our achievements to the voters.

"It is up to them to decide but I hope they would give us a chance to continue serving them," he said, adding that the voters should ensure there would be ample representation to voice the aspirations of the Chinese community in both the Federal and state government.

Liow said the party had also campaign hard to help other Barisan candidates to secure a win in the state.

He said MCA would continue to speak up for the rights of the community and protect their interests.

Liow will be defending his parliamentary seat of Bentong against greenie Wong Tack, who is contesting under a DAP ticket.

GE13: Gambir incumbent urge voters to vote for party not individuals

Posted: 04 May 2013 02:47 AM PDT

MUAR: Gambir incumbent M. Asojan from Barisan Nasional is appealing to voters not to vote based on the candidate or individual but the party that he represents in GE13.

"I feel like the underdog as all the three candidates challenging me are Malays. This is also a Malay majority seat with 12,037 voters comprising 56% of the total number of 21,832 voters in the constituency," he added.

Asojan is facing Johor PAS commissioner Datuk Dr Mahfodz Mohammad and two independents including Yunus Mustakim and Mohd Zan Abu, both former Umno leaders in the area.

"I know both these guys and one of them was even my assistant before they turned on me after claiming that MIC should return the Gambir seat to Umno," he added.

Asojan, who was a second term assemblyman, said this was a real challenge for him especially with both the independent candidates knowing all about the Barisan strategy to win back the seat.

"I was down in the beginning but thanks to the encouragement and motivation from my wife and Johor Barisan Nasional chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman, I picked myself up and have started campaigning aggressively.

Asojan said unlike his opponents who campaigned along racial lines, he was more interested in talking about the good done by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak through his economic transformation projects for the country.

"I tell my voters that I have been selected by Barisan to represent them. As such I will continue to do my best for everyone in the constituency," he said, adding that he was confident with the support from all races.

Asojan hoped that the voters would elect him in GE13 as it would be a true win and uniting of the people under the "1Malaysia concept" due to the racial population in the area comprising 56% Malays, 39.7% Chinese and 3.8% Indians.

"I stress this because I will need the support from all the communities to serve the people here," he said, adding that he was also having about 80 ceramah's since nomination day to small groups of people in his constituency.

Asojan, who is state MIC secretary, was upbeat about implementing the 20-point Johor Barisan manifesto in his area as it would help improve the living standards of the people in the state.

"I think the move to get government-linked companies to build homes under a special scheme will attract people to continue working in the estates," he said.

Gambir is the only constituency in the state with a four-cornered fight.

GE13: Najib’s popularity warms Norashman’s heart

Posted: 04 May 2013 02:45 AM PDT

PONTIAN: It has been an "extraordinary" experience for young Mohd Norashman Najib, who also finds it heart-warming when his father is well-received and welcomed by the people he visits and meets.

"It is just extraordinary to see the sincerity in the people's faces as they come out to show their support for him," said the 22-year-old son of Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak when met on the Prime Minister's campaign trail in Pekan Nenas, near here.

"I have been going around with my father for the last one week and it has really been an exciting experience," added Norashman.

Asked if the hectic campaign schedule was affecting their father-son time, Norashman said they talked about personal things while travelling to functions.

"The best moments to have private chats with my father are when we are travelling together," he said, adding that he felt inspired by his dad's energy and charisma.

On the stream of female admirers often seen trailing him and asking to have pictures taken with him, Norashman smiled: "I am getting quite used to the attention."

"It is an overwhelming response that I get whenever I travel with my father and I am more than happy to oblige," he said, promptly agreeing to have a picture taken with some women who were earlier debating about who should be first to snap a picture with him.
