GE13: MCA’s continuous care solved many people’s problems

Posted: 02 May 2013 07:58 PM PDT

THE strong bonding among people in rural and semi-rural areas have made a difference to the life of the people, especially the elderly.

Tan Chong said MCA and the people are like one big family, and the party would help those in need, like what they would do for their family members.

"This is especially important for the elderly who stay alone, or whose children are working out-station or overseas," he added.

Though MCA did not demand anything in return, he said he wished to let the people know that the party needed their mandate to continue serving them.

"It is very sad to witness how some people condemn us now, though they are the ones whom we have helped before," Tan, 48 said, recounting some of his encounters during his campaign trail.

He is in a straight fight with DAP's Lim Eng Guan for the Bekok state seat in Johor.

Tan nevertheless said he did not blame those who showed their animosity openly because their actions were under the influence of the Opposition.

The DAP, he added, had been out to poison the people's minds – twisting facts, exaggerating issues and telling lies – to sway votes.

On how to counter the aggressive attacks, Tan said he had to bank on his track record and good relationship with the people.

Tan may be a newbie, but certainly a familiar face in Bekok.

A Labis district councillor for 11 years, he is also active in welfare work, youth activities and sports.

His participation in various non-governmental organisations since 1994 had also enabled him to forge a close bond with the community, he said.

Tan, a father of four, also learned what it took to be an elected representative after he became special officer to incumbent Labis MP Datuk Chua Tee Yong in 2010.

Bekok is under the Labis parliamentary seat.

"I still have a lot more to learn and hope the voters will give me a chance this elections so that I can serve them further and also learn from them how to make life better for them," Tan said.

On bringing in development for the people, Tan said Bekok had good tourism potential, citing the Endau-Rompin national park and Sungai Bantang waterfall as examples.

He also pledged to further upgrade the infrastructure in the constituency, especially the drainage system and roads and also make the public complain system more efficient.

GE13: Tan banks on ‘tried and tested leader’ adage

Posted: 02 May 2013 07:58 PM PDT

JOHOR BARU: Barisan Nasional candidate for Johor Jaya state seat Tan Cher Puk aims to win over the voters with proven "sincerity and track record".

Tan said that his advantage over his opponents was that he was a "tried and tested leader" and people know what he was capable of doing, being the incumbent state assemblyman for the past two terms.

"It does not matter if it is visiting the voters and having tea with them in the morning or drawing up a proposal plan for flood mitigation projects – you have to have a sincere heart to provide service to the people.

"I am confident that the people in Johor Jaya will be touched by my sincerity after all these years," said the 52-year-old.

Tan's campaign posters were also printed with the tagline "Vote Tan Cher Puk for sincere, round the clock service" with his smile flashing across the campaign.

Tan, a father-of-three, said that during his stint as state assemblyman, he helped solve flood problems in nine villages with more than 2,600 residents.

"Some of the villages suffer from flood woes for more that 60 years and I decided that we need to put a stop to that in line with my plans to upgrade infrastructure in my areas," he said.

He added that it would usually flood up to one metre in Taman Ros Merah and other low lying areas but after the mitigation projects completed in a span of five years, there are no more flash flood problems in the areas.

He also said that the infrastructure in Johor Jaya has been upgraded and facilities like police stations and fire department have also been set up in various areas there.

If elected for the third term, Tan said that he plans to look into stepping up efforts to combat crime and produce more opportunities for youths in the area in line with Iskandar Malaysia developments.

He will be contesting against DAP's Liow Cai Tung, 27, and independent Elwin Hong Eng Wah, 50.

Meanwhile, new face Liow, also has plans to reduce the crime rate there especially snatch theft and robberies for the safety of the people.

She added that although she was young, she has a team of experienced politicians and senior leaders who would guide her if she were elected.

Motorcycle business owner Hong's plans are to start a "free-trade zone" where locals can trade and increase revenue.

The Johor Jaya state seat is carved from the Pasir Gudang parliamentary constituency.

GE13: Medical doctor helping people via politics

Posted: 02 May 2013 07:59 PM PDT

SEGAMAT: Not contend with covering every area in his constituency, Datuk Dr Lee Hong Tee, Barisan Nasional candidate for Jementah is going on another round in hope that he can convince the people here that he is their best candidate.

The medical doctor who left his practice 10 years ago had been tending to the needs of the people through a different avenue – via politics.

"I've been actively serving the people here for 10 years, they know me very well for the various services, programmes and developments I have help usher into Jementah and Segamat.

"I am glad that after 20 years of lobbying for better road connectivity, during my time as wakil rakyat, I have managed to see to it that the new road expansion from Segamat to Tangkak has been approved.

"By the end of next year, the people here can enjoy the new wider roads which we hope will usher in a new period of prosperity and economic boom for the people of Segamat," he told Star Metro.

Dr Lee, will be defending his seat against newcover from DAP Tan Chen Choon, who is also the husband of former three term MP for Batu Gajah, Fong Po Kuan.

"Simply put, he is an outsider who does not know the people and the area here.

"My opponent is Tan, not his wife. When we stand for an election, it is up to the candidate's personal ability to perform and his possible credentials as a wakil rakyat. No one else can represent him after he or she is elected," he said.

Dr Lee however said he was not taking lightly of his opponent's chances and gave him the respect due as a worthy opponent.

He acknowledged that the Chinese anti establishment feeling that first began in 2008 had since spread to Johor and could be a factor in his election bid this time.

Dr Lee however, hoped that the voters in Jementah would put their trust in him as he has served them diligently over the past 10 years.

"I've been working even harder on my election campaign this time than in 2008. I've covered almost all areas within my constituency and already conducting my second sweep of some areas," he said.
