Vote for your favourite Palm Portrait

Posted: 23 May 2013 06:37 PM PDT

Visitors to the Palm Portraits photography exhibition currently being held at One World Hotel, Selangor, will get to view a collection of creative, original photographs on the palm oil industry, as seen through the eyes of photography enthusiasts and the public.

Organised by the Malaysian Palm Oil Council (MPOC), the exhibition features entries from the Palm Portraits photography competition launched last October.

It is the final exhibition before the announcement of the winners next month.

The first and second exhibitions were held in March and April.

Showcasing both amateur and professional entries, the photos were selected by judges based on criteria such as originality, content and meaningful captions depicting an interesting story behind the photo.

The contest aims to capture the beauty of palm oil and raise awareness among the public on the palm oil industry.

Response for the competition was overwhelming, with 583 entries submitted online at their website.

Participants sent in their takes on aspects portraying the palm oil industry, from plantations to people and products.

They were also required to submit an interesting caption along with their entries. The winners will be chosen through public online voting and a panel of judges.

They will also have their photos featured in a coffeetable book.

The first-prize winner will receive RM5,000 and two photography classes worth RM780 while the second-prize winner will get RM3,000 and one photography class worth RM390.

The third-prize winners will walk away with RM2,000 and two photography workshops.

One of the interesting shots from the exhibition was P. Shashikumar's.

"I was on my way to work when I spotted a hornbill plucking a palm oil seed," he said about his entry.

The 39-year-old plantation group manager likes to take photos of birds and natural organisms.

Meanwhile, his friend Yap Tect Hean's entry was also selected to be in the running for the prize.

His piece captured sunrays shining in between the palm trees.

"It symbolises hope and the rising of a new day," said Yap.

The public can view the full list of entries and vote for their favourites until the end of this month at the Palm Portraits website.

All entries are eligible for voting.

The exhibition is until today at One World Hotel and is held in conjunction with Palm Oil Nutrition Week.
