Launch of new Hospice Pahang secretariat

KUANTAN: Hospice Pahang marked its 10th anniversary with the official opening of its new secretariat.

Hospice Council Malaysia president Datuk Seri Dr T. Devaraj declared the new secretariat officially open at a modest ceremony in Kuantan Garden here recently.

Outgoing Hospice Pahang president Dr Pushpa Ratnam thanked her committee members for bringing the society to its present position.

She said Hospice Pahang currently had two trained staff nurses who make home visits under the society's Home Care programme.

"Currently, the society has about 90 patients under this programme. We also have an office administrator who attends to the day-to-day running of the society," said Dr Pushpa.

She also thanked the Health Ministry for the RM17,000 grant that was given to the society to purchase equipment and the public in Kuantan for their continuous support and donation.

At the annual general meeting that followed, Dr Pushpa stepped down in favour of Dr Philip Chai Feng Yih who was elected president.

Adopting good occupational safety and health practices

JOHOR BARU: Malaysians need to look to Scandinavian countries to learn about improving occupational safety and health, said National Institute Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye.

He said that countries like Denmark, Norway and Sweden are "exemplary in their occupational safety and health practice".

Lee said that Australia and the United States are also good examples to follow but the Scandinavians are leaders in the area of making the workplace safe for the employees.

"They have excelled in their practice by making occupational safety and health part of their work culture.

"This has made them achieve almost zero to one accident per few thousand employees compared to Malaysia's ratio of about 3.1 out of 1,000 workers," he said in a press conference here recently.

Lee added that Malaysians were getting increasingly conscious about workplace safety as figures showed that occupational accidents have gone down by 50% in the past 10 years.

He was speaking after the launch of emergency response and fire response seminar at Niosh southern branch here.

Besides that, Lee advised employers not to put their workers' safety at risk just for the sake of cutting costs in their respective organisations by not providing the right and adequate personal protection equipment.

"It is understandable that employers want to cut cost but it should not be done at the expense of sacrificing the employees' safety," he said.

He also said that employees who do not wear proper safety gear especially in high-risk industries like oil and gas, construction and chemical fields is an offence and the employers could be imposed a fine.

Healthy coconut yogurt

JOHOR BARU: A team of researchers from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) here has successfully formulated a coconut-based yogurt concoction, which is dubbed to be an alternative to the traditional dairy-based yogurt.

Completely free from diary, the concoction is known as 'cogurt' and is believed to be the first of its kind in the country.

The university's Bioproduct Development Institute manager for research and development Dr Harisun Yaakob said that it took about three years of research for the team to formulate a specific formulation for the cogurt.

"We used a specific formula called the Response Surface Methodology to produce the cogurt," she said.

She added that the cogurt was an alternative to yogurt, especially for those who were lactose intolerant.

"Despite many claims that too much coconut milk could cause high cholesterol, people should understand that coconut milk has high nutrients and produces good fats.

"The nutrient contents in a coconut can easily be metabolised and hence easily be converted to energy," she said during a press conference here at the university on May 21.

Harisun also said that during a comparison experiment with other dairy-based yogurts in the market, it was found that cogurt had higher content of nutrients, which could improve human health.

"Cogurt could also help to maximise the usage of the country's sources of raw material, as coconut is one of them and is suitable for all ages to consume," she added.

The price of the product could be similar to the conventional yogurt in the market or even cheaper, and the life span of the cogurt is also similar which is about seven to 10 days when kept at cool temperature.

She also stressed that cogurt could eliminate fungus in the body, promote weigh-loss and even help in the human immune system.
