Time for reconciliation, says Pahang Sultan

Posted: 21 May 2013 04:18 AM PDT

PEKAN: The Sultan of Pahang has called for special attention to be given to the strengthening of racial unity in the state as well as the spread of accurate information.

"Racial unity is the foundation of peace and stability. Accurate information is important to avoid confusion and misunderstanding among the people," said Sultan Ahmad Shah.

He also called on all parties to respect the rights of others, stop provoking and causing disturbance that could damage the order of the state.

"The 13th general election is over, including all manner of campaigning related to it. I do not want to see accusations, inaccurate representations, baseless matters, lies and slander.

"All these must be stopped at once. The focus now should be given to developing and advancing the community and the people," stressed the ruler.

The Ruler hoped the state government would focus on handling the problems faced by all citizens in Pahang.

"I understand not everything can be solved but what is more important is that there must be appropriate effort given.

"I am confident my government will include all parties and be united in line with the reconciliation spirit proposed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak," said Sultan Ahmad Shah at the recent swearing-in ceremony of the state executive council members.

The ceremony saw 10 assemblymen, including a woman, being sworn in to the Pahang state executive council before Sultan Ahmad Shah.

They are Datuk Shahaniza Sham-suddin (Kuala Sentul), Norolazali Sulaiman (Guai), Syed Ibrahim Syed Ahmad (Kerdau), Datuk Shahiruddin Ab Moin (Dong), Datuk Mohd Johari Hussain (Tioman) and Datuk Abu Bakar Harun (Chini).

The retained excos are Datuk Mohd Sharkar Shamsudin (Lanchang), Datuk Mohd Soffi Abd Razak (Benta), Datuk Wan Rosdy Wan Ismail (Jelai) and Datuk Shafik Fauzan Sharif (Inderapura).

There were no MCA representatives in the line-up this time around even though there were two elected assemblymen from the party.

Pahang Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Adnan Yaakob said the excos' portfolios would be determined after a special meeting.

"I have listed 33 committees to be established. There will also be a special committee for unity," he told reporters after the ceremony.

Adnan also said he would form a special committee to give attention to the Chinese community.

"Maybe I will handle this portfolio myself. This shows that it is very important," he said.

Grandma on hunger strike against Lynas rare earth refinery

Posted: 20 May 2013 05:02 PM PDT

KUANTAN: A 72-year-old grandmother of 10 is adamant to go on a hunger strike until the Lynas rare earth refinery is shut down.

Despite being advised by a doctor to call off her strike, Tuw Ah Mei who had gone more than 20 days without food, refused to back down.

Dr Pushpa Ratnam said at most, the woman could only go on for another week before she was at risk of death.

"At her age and weight, I strongly advise her to come out of fasting. She could go into failure and death if she pushes herself further," said the physician after checking on Tuw at her home here recently.

Dr Pushpa said it was not worthwhile for Tuw to damage her own health just to protest against the plant.

"We can fight on different platforms. If anything happened to her, she will be forgotten," she said.

Semambu assemblyman Lee Chean Chung also persuaded Tuw to stop but was instead scolded for not being supportive.

"I don't want anyone to pressure me. Even if I fall, there are others behind me to carry on the struggle. You do it your way, I will do it my way," said Tuw, who had also shaved her head bald.

She said she only drank water to quench her thirst since starting the hunger strike on April 26.

Lee said he would monitor Tuw's health and continue to persuade her.

Resort in blood donation drive to help society

Posted: 21 May 2013 04:17 AM PDT

KUANTAN: A recent blood donation campaign organised by the Bukit Gambang Resort City saw a total of 62 staff and guests donating blood to support the annual event.

All the donors were served with light refreshments after the programme ended some five hours later.

Resort general manager Wong Joon Teck said the programme was part of its corporate social responsibility initiative to help the society.

"It is a noble effort by all parties, especially staff from the Tengku Ampuan Afzan Hospital, as the blood banks are always in need of supply.

"We are glad to be able to lend a helping hand to those in need during an emergency," he said.

Wong said the campaign was held for the second consecutive year and would be an annual affair.

He expressed gratitude to hotel guests at the Arabian Bay Resort and Caribbean Bay Resort who took time off from their respite to support the campaign.

"We are encouraged with the good response and look forward to more donors next year," he said.

Bukit Gambang Resort City is an integrated resort city, offering holidaymakers a choice of both wet and dry sections – the Water Park and its newly-open Safari Park.
