JOHOR BARU: Members of the public are encouraged to download the free applications created by the police into their smartphones to help combat crimes in the state.

Johor police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Mohd Mokhtar Mohd Shariff said its Community Alerts (CommAlerts) launched on March 2, this year had received good response from the public.

He said currently some 8,801 users had utilised the CommAlerts of which 7,161 had registered via android handphone and 1,640 through Apple IOS.

He said the numbers of newly registered users for the CommAlerts had increased daily in Johor as well as those from Singapore.

CommAlerts is a free smartphone application for public to lodge emergency crime cases to police via their mobile phone just pressing the dedicated button set on their device.

Their alerts will be automatically channeled to the Johor police contingent operations centre and officers from the nearest police station would be sent to the crime scene.

"By subscribing to CommAlerts, there are no more excuses for not knowing how to contact the police when you are facing with the life threatening momemt,'' added DCP Mohd Mokhtar.

Similarly, he said the E-Alerts was the continuation of the Johor police web portal launched on July 2008, where more than 500,000 users had surfed the website.

DCP Mokhtar said Johor police were the first police contingent the country to launch such portal to receive and disseminate information on non-emergency cases through the media centre.

He said the E-Alerts was an interactive tool between the police and civilians on where information related to the non-emergency cases could be channeled via audio visual.

DCP Mokhtar said previously, the E-Alerts was only accessible via computers or notebooks but users could easily access it through their smartphones.

Brothers Ching Gek Boon, 37, and Ching Wee Boon, 33, the owners of a cars could only watch in despair as their heavily modified cars went up in flames at their home in Taman Skudai Baru here on April 30.

"I rushed downstairs and was shocked to find that my whole porch area was in flames," he said adding that upon closer inspection, he realised that the flames were coming from inside his cars.

Gek Boon said he immediately woke his family up and ushered them out of the back entrance before rushing to the porch with his brother Wee Boon to try and extinguish the fire.

Dr Wee: No truth to service centre moving to Semerang

Posted: 14 May 2013 04:59 PM PDT

YONG PENG: Ayer Hitam MP Datuk Dr Wee Ka Siong has squashed rumours reportedly saying that he would relocate his service centre from Yong Peng to Semerang.

There were rumours in the air that Dr Wee did not want to serve in the Chinese majority Yong Peng after receiving less support from them in the general election.

"There are all kinds of rumours, many people asked where will I move to and it confuses me because I never thought of that question.

"Yong Peng is an administration centre where the district council is located and the town has the highest population," he said when met at his existing service centre in Wisma Koperasi Yong Peng Berhad in Jalan Besar here recently.

Dr Wee won a majority of 7,310 votes against PAS' Hu Pang Chow. In 2008, he defeated PAS candidate Hussin Sujak by a majority of 13,909.

Dr Wee said he respected the people's verdict and never felt disappointed because of a the lower majority.

He explained that the Barisan Nasional's state assemblyman service centre has to seize operation because it was no longer effective, while his staff at his service centre located next door took two days to sort out the remaining cases under the former Yong Peng assemblyman Lim Kee Moi.

Lim, who received 8,350, lost to DAP's Chew Peck Chow who garnered 10,825 votes in the May 5 general election.

Dr Wee said his service centre resumed operations last Wednesday and had handled 40 applications for financial aids for chronic patients, 10 BR1M RM500 cash aid appeal cases and a number of applications for affordable housing scheme.

"I hope the public understand that she (Lim) is no longer an elected-representative and she cannot operate under the name of assemblyman, otherwise it will be embarrassing to have two assemblymen at the same time.

"We have to respect the new elected-representative, I believe she has her own service centre to serve the public.

"All parties must respect the people's decision and since a new assemblyman has been elected, she (Chew) is duty bound to serve especially in the area of state and local matters as she is given a chance, platform and position to do so," he said.

As an elected MP, Dr Wee said he was in the midst to restructure his service centre to include more staff and would continue to work harder and serve.

He added that he would have no problems to cooperate with the new assemblyman particularly on matters that would benefit the people.

"If there are good ideas that benefit the people it should be accepted as we don't have to go against it just because it's an Opposition party," he said.
