GE13: Polling in Pahang goes on smoothly with no untoward incidents

Posted: 09 May 2013 04:08 PM PDT

KUANTAN: The people of Pahang seem to have accepted the polls results judging by the calm post-elections, said state Election Commission (EC) director Othman Noh.

He said there was no untoward incidents or unruliness reported in the state during and after the elections process on Sunday.

"Everything ran smoothly and there were no problems. Things have also returned to normal. The political parties and the community seem to have accepted the results," he said when contacted.

On the late tallying for the Raub and Tras seats, Othman said there were some difficulties encountered due a mistake made by a polling centre head.

"From what the returning officer told me, two sealed ballot boxes had to be reopened because the polling centre chief mistakenly put the envelopes containing the counting results inside.

"However, everything was done according to procedure and in front of the candidates and their representatives," he said, adding that it took time because they had to find the polling centre chief.

The official results for the two seats were only confirmed at about 2.50am Sunday.

On the matter of police reports lodged over the indelible ink, Othman said the state EC would forward it to headquarters after receiving a full report from the police.

Pahang police management department chief Asst Comm Mohd Anuar Othman said there were a total of 22 such reports lodged.

Boothini is ready to perform better this year

STATE athlete and last year's Ipoh Starwalk winner for the under-20 girls category, S. Boothini, is eager to repeat her performance this year.

The 17-year-old Ipoh lass from SMK Seri Keledang has been training hard for the walk under the watchful eyes of school coach V. Krishnan.

"For me, the walk is a great practise ground to see the results of my training. Hopefully I can perform better this year.

"The experience will also be valuable for me as I'm preparing to represent the state at the upcoming Malaysian Schools Sports Council (MSSM) national 5km walk championship this year," she told The Star.

Joining Boothini is another state athlete, K. Poovili, 18, who completed her Form Five at the school last year and won third place in the under-20 girls category last year.

"I have learned from my experience last year and have been training consistently in the morning. I hope to better my previous time," she said.

Principal Pong Ah Kau said the students snapped up Starwalk participation forms like hot cakes and it was a fantastic response.

"About 500 students participated last year and we hope the number will increase this year.

"Even though we are a school in the outskirts of Ipoh, we continue to encourage the students to participate in the healthy walk," he said.

A special treat for elderly parents

Posted: 09 May 2013 06:18 PM PDT

KUANTAN: In conjunction with Mother's and Father's Day celebrations, a Kuantan-based businessman organised a special programme to appreciate elderly parents.

Perfect Group managing director Datuk Seri Johny Ch'ng Ewe Gee said he decided to do something special this year for senior citizens who had done much for the state.

"During their prime years, most if not all of them have contributed much to nation-building.

"Now in their twilight years, they should be respected, appreciated and celebrated," he said when met after the event held in Jalan Bukit Ubi here recently.

Ch'ng, who is also the Pahang Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation chairman, said about 1,500 senior citizens were present during the programme and they were all presented with some gifts.

However, he said quite a number of the old folks were seen coming on their own without the company of their children.

"I hope the younger generation will take good care of their aged parents and not abandoned them at old folks home.

"This is part of the Chinese culture to uphold filial piety," he said.

Ch'ng said he hoped to organise a more bigger event next year with the support of all parties.

During the event, a monk was invited to lead a prayer's session before a cake-cutting ceremony to celebrate the birthday of three senior citizens.

Additional gifts were presented to those aged 70 and 80.

A total of 12 mud turtles and dozens of birds were released to mark the occasion.
