GE13: Unveiling their big plans

Posted: 07 May 2013 05:39 AM PDT

Several newly-minted MPs and assemblymen in Selangor and Kuala Lumpur share initiatives and programmes that they have in mind for constituents.

newly-elected MP Datuk Ahmad Fauzi Zahari has already compiled a long list of issues to resolve after winning the Setiawangsa seat on Sunday.

Ahmad Fauzi won with a majority of 1,390 votes against Ibrahim Yaacob of PKR

"My first step will be to conduct a post-mortem because of a sharp decline compared to the previous general election where Datuk Seri Zulhasnan Rafique won the seat with a majority of 8,134 votes," he said.

Top of the list, Ahmad Fauzi said, was the need for a Laman Kenangan or funeral parlour for non-Muslim residents living in public and low-cost housing.

"I have been to a few funerals at the PPR in Setapak where Hindu residents had to perform the bathing ritual for their deceased kin by setting up tents in the courtyard.

"They should have a proper facility to honour their dead and not have to do it in the open," said Ahmad Fauzi.

He added that there was already a facility at PPR Sungai Bonus in Setapak and that plans would be made to build more at PA Desa Rejang, PPR Semarak and PPR Air Panas.

Ahmad Fauzi also acknowledged that more would be done to resolve maintenance issues at PPR housing.

"Issues such as lack of parking space, faulty lifts and garbage collection need to be looked into," he said, adding that he would engage more with residents.

The first thing Ng Sze Han wants to do as the assemblyman for Kinrara is to attend to the complaints he received during his campaign trail.

The 42-year-old Ng said the grouses included garbage woes, clogged drains and faulty streetlights.

"I will ensure their problems are brought up to the relevant departments," he said.

DAP's Ng garnered won with a majority of 14,604 votes, defeating Datuk Wong Hock Aun of Barisan.

On winning, Ng thanked his wife Lim Bee Eng, family members and his campaigning team for their support over the last two weeks.

Wong, despite losing, turned up at the tallying centre in Taman Puchong Indah on Sunday night to congratulate Ng.

"I will continue to fulfil my responsibilities as the Puchong MCA chairman. That includes making sure the newly constructed SJK (C) Kheng Chee is opened soon," said Wong.

He added that he hoped Ng would assist the school in his capacity as the new Kinrara assemblyman.

Meanwhile, Gobind Singh Deo received a kiss from his wife Sangeeta Kaur Sidhu after he was declared winner for the Puchong parliamentary seat at the tallying centre at Taman Puchong Indah on Sunday.

Gobind defeated Gerakan candidate A. Kohilan Pillay with a majority of 32,802 votes to retain Puchong.

"I will continue to serve the Puchong people and continue to speak out in Parliament on their behalf," he said.

First-timer Yeo Bee Yin of DAP won the Damansara Utama state seat with an overwhelming majority of 30,689 votes.

She defeated MCA veteran Datuk C.K. Lim and experienced residents' association chairman Liew Wei Beng. The two bagged 6,614 and 380 votes respectively.

"I didn't expect this because I am a newcomer. I thank voters for giving me this opportunity, especially since I was contesting against two experienced candidates," she said.

Newly-elected MP for Titiwangsa Datuk Johari Abdul Ghani said he would look into the reasons behind the sudden shift of Chinese voters against Barisan.

Johari won with a 866-vote majority against Ahmad Zamri Asa'ad Khuzaimi of PAS.

"I will be focusing on helping constituents with their businesses and related economic issues," he said.

Johari said obtaining 23,034 votes for GE13 was significant as in 2008 Barisan only received 15,885 votes.

"This is an indication that people are happy with my services," he said.

Newly elected Kelana Jaya MP Wong Chen said the two weeks of gruelling campaign had paid off.

Besides the ceramah and many photo sessions with his now-famous round spectacles, his campaign included many dialogue sessions where voters had questions on local and national issues.

"The dialogues allowed the voters to get to know me and my stand on issues," said the 45-year-old lawyer, who is also PKR's investment and trade bureau chairman.

"More importantly, my aim is to do a survey of residents to find out the demographics of the constituency.

"From there, I will decide on the kind of programmes needed," he said.

Wong won the seat against Barisan's Loh Seng Kok with a majority of 28,827 votes.

DAP's Lai Nyuk Lan, created waves by defeating Ng Chok Sin, a well-known figure in Sungai Pelek.

Lai defeated with a 1,972-vote majority, making it the first victory for DAP in Sungai Pelek.

Lai, a businesswoman, and also a former village head, is also the first female representative for this state seat.

PAS has a reason to celebrate when its legal adviser Mohamed Hanipa Maidin defeated Barisan's Datuk Seri Mohd Zin Mohamed and two other independent candidates with a majority of 1,104 votes for the Sepang seat.

"In Sepang, there is a need for a hospital, as people either have to travel to Putrajaya or Seremban to seek medical treatment.

"Secondly, there are some abandoned or stalled projects throughout the district and I will look into reviving these," he said.

Mohd Haslin Hassan of PAS beat Barisan's Nisman Yusof by 682 votes for the Tanjung Sepat seat.

Independent candidate Muventen Munusamy polled only 117 votes.

"One of my immediate priorities is to upgrade the many dilapidated public facilities all over Tanjung Sepat, such as the old community halls.

"I also intend to help boost the socio-economic status of the womenfolk by helping to market local produce and tourism attractions," said Haslin.

The only Barisan victory in this huge district went to Shahrum Sharif, who won the Dengkil seat.

Shahrum, another first-timer, polled 17,801 against PKR's Borhan Aman Shah, who obtained 15,484 votes. Azmi Othman of KITA only garnered 203 votes.

Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) has given political parties two weeks starting today to remove their party flags, banners, posters and operation centres or risk losing their security deposit. A DBKL spokesman said DBKL would appoint its own contractor to do the job if they were not removed after the deadline. The spokesman hoped political parties would do it as soon as possible as some of the campaign material were located at inappropriate places that could pose a danger to the public. Meanwhile, PPR Pantai Ria volunteers are cleaning up posters, banners and bunting in Lembah Pantai yesterday.
