Sam Mendes in talks to make the next Bond flick

Posted: 31 May 2013 12:58 AM PDT

Skyfall director Sam Mendes is back at the negotiating table to make the 24th installment of the British spy film series, relays Deadline.com.

After being courted for a long time to make the next Bond picture, Mendes withdrew from the project in early March owing to commitments up to 2014.

The film franchise producers subsequently decided to wait for Mendes so as to capitalize on the unprecedented success of Skyfall, which grossed US$1.11 billion at the box office, outselling all the other Bond films to date.

During the three months of uncertainty about Mendes, EON Productions sifted through a whole slew of resumes from other filmmakers capable of handling action and suspense well and with a modicum of artistic credibility.

The shortlisted candidates included Christopher Nolan (Inception), Nicolas Winding Refn (Only God Forgives), Tom Hooper (The King's Speech), Ang Lee (Life Of Pi), Shane Black (Iron Man 3) and David Yates (last four films in the Harry Potter series).

The follow-up to Skyfall is slated for theatrical release by 2016. Daniel Craig is currently discussing the terms of reprising the role of Agent 007.

Ralph Fiennes, Naomie Harris and Ben Whishaw, who played the new M, Miss Moneypenny and Q in the last picture, are attached to reprise their roles in the next one.

'Pirates Of The Caribbean 5' gets a pair of directors

Posted: 31 May 2013 12:34 AM PDT

Disney has chosen Norwegian filmmakers Joachim Ronning and Espen Sandberg to make the next Pirates Of The Caribbean.

According to Deadline.com, Rob Marshall, who made Pirates 4, is to be succeeded by this Scandinavian duo, who made their breakthrough in 2006 with the Western Bandidas, produced by Luc Besson and starring Penelope Cruz and Salma Hayek.

The two teammates won out over Rupert Sanders and Fredrik Bond to make the next pirate picture starring Johnny Depp as Jack Sparrow. Pirates Of The Caribbean 5 is scheduled to start shooting at the end of the year or beginning of 2014.

Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg may have been picked partly for their knowledge of the sea. Last winter their ocean odyssey Kon-Tiki was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film at the 2013 Academy Awards.

This historical drama recounts Thor Heyerdahl's expedition of 1947, when the Norwegian explorer and ethnologist, who didn't know how to swim or sail, set forth in a primitive balsawood raft with a five-man crew to cross the perilous Pacific from Peru to Polynesia.

His point was to prove his theory that indigenous peoples from South America could very well have reached and settled in Polynesia in pre-Colombian times.

Filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh dead at 49

Posted: 30 May 2013 11:08 PM PDT

KOLKATA/MUMBAI (Reuters) - Filmmaker Rituparno Ghosh, known for his sensitive portrayal of interpersonal relationships, died in Kolkata on Thursday of a heart attack. He was 49.

Ghosh first caught the attention of cinema lovers in the 1990s with a clutch of films made in his native Bengali language.

His work, often showcased on the Western film festival circuit, resonated with global audiences with memorable and strong women characters. Mainstream Bollywood stars such as Amitabh Bachchan, Aishwarya Rai and Ajay Devgn featured in some of his later films.

"Shocked and deeply grieved ... loss of a great creative mind," Bachchan told Reuters in a text message.

Bachchan, who worked with Ghosh in the 2007 English-language film The Last Lear, said he had spoken to the director recently about a new film they were planning.

Born in 1963, Ghosh started his career in advertising and made his movie debut with a children's film Hirer Angti (The Diamond Ring).

Ghosh won a dozen national film awards, including the best feature film honour for Unishe April (19 April) in 1995 that explored the nuances of a mother-daughter relationship. His film Chokher Bali (Sand in the Eye), starring Aishwarya Rai, was nominated for the Golden Leopard, the top prize at the Locarno Film Festival in 2003.

"No one understood women better than Rituparno," said actress Raima Sen, who was cast in several of his films. "It is a personal loss to me."

Ghosh, who flaunted his sexuality and often dressed in women's clothing, also played gay characters in some of his last films.

The filmmaker tweeted on Tuesday he had wrapped up shooting for his new movie Satyanweshi (The Truth Seeker), a crime thriller about the popular fictional Bengali detective Byomkesh Bakshi.

"Very very sad that the man whose every frame spoke of cinematic beauty and gave a new identity to New wave Bengali Cinema is no more," filmmaker Onir said on Twitter.

"His passing away will be a big loss not only to lovers of cinema and art, but a huge loss to the LGBT community," he added.
