Groups regret Sukaham left without commissioners

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 09:42 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The Centre for Public Policy Studies (CPPS) and Malaysian Bar expressed regret that the Government had not acted sooner to appoint Suhakam commissioners before their term ended on Thursday.

CPPS chairman Tan Sri Ramon Navaratnam said this was the second time Suhakam had been left without commissioners.

"What happened? This (end of term) was not unanticipated," he said.

Previously in 2010, there was a 45-day gap between the leaving of the Suhakam team led by Tan Sri Abu Talib Othman on April 23 and the appointment of the team led by Tan Sri Hasmy Agam, comprising Datuk Dr Khaw Lake Tee, James Nayagam, Prof Datuk Dr Mahmood Zuhdi A. Majid, Muhammad Sha'ani Abdullah, Jannie Lasimbang and Datuk Detta Samen, on June 7.

Their three-year appointment was backdated to April 26.

The Suhakam Act allows for a second three-year term.

On April 4, former Bar president Lim Chee Wee and Abu Talib were reported in The Star as saying the caretaker government (as Parliament had been dissolved the day before) could invoke the doctrine of necessity to appoint commissioners.

However, Navaratnam is of the view it would be improper for an interim government to do so unless it involved a state of emergency.

"This kind of privilege can be abused.

"After polling on May 5, the government of the day should act immediately to appoint commissioners and make sure such a situation does not recur," he added.

Noting the differing viewpoints on whether an interim government can make new appointments, current Bar president Christopher Leong said it would be "less controversial to renew the term of a current commissioner since he or she had been evaluated before and could be re-evaluated for an extension".

Leong, who is a member of the Suhakam Selection Committee chaired by the Chief Secretary, would not disclose whether they had made recommendations to the Prime Minister for re-appointing any of the seven.

He pointed out the Government could add new commissioners later.

GE13: Send the rocket to the moon, Hisham tells Johoreans

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 09:17 AM PDT

KLUANG: Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein has described the May 5 general election as different from previous ones as it would determine if Johor remained a heartland to Barisan Nasional.

He called on voters in his Semberong constituency and in Johor to foil DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang's efforts to gain a foothold in Johor by "sending the rocket to the moon".

On another matter, Hishammuddin said the allegations that he and his wife were aristocrats who did not mingle with Semberong constituents as being borne out of sheer ignorance.

The party which hurled such allegation against him and his wife, Tengku Marsilla Tengku Abdullah, was completely out of sync with the real situation on the ground, he said.

"I say, the allegation is a shot in the dark as they (the party) do not know how close my wife and I are to the people in Semberong. Only Semberong residents know and are aware," he said.

Hishammuddin was speaking at a goodwill session with the residents of Kampung Melayu Batu Empat, Paloh which was attended by Barisan Nasional (BN) Paloh state seat candidate, Teo Yap Kun.

GE13: EC reprints book version of electoral roll after corrections

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 07:01 AM PDT

KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission (EC) has reprinted the electoral roll following the discovery of errors in the identity numbers of early voters, its secretary Datuk Kamaruddin Mohamed Baria said.

He said the mistakes involved only 572 of the 272,387 early voters nationwide and the corrected version has been distributed to the returning officers and candidates through the state election offices.

"We will also write to the political party leaders on the matter to ensure the same version is used by the candidates, their agents and EC personnel at the early polling centres," he said in a statement here. Kamaruddin said the mistake only affected the electoral roll in book form and not the CD, EC website, the 13th General Election portal or the short-messaging-system (sms).

"The data in these systems are correct and show that the voters identity information are the same as in the EC's electoral roll database," he said. - Bernama
