GE13: BN candidate shares special bonds with locals in Tanjong Piai

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 03:30 PM PDT

PONTIAN: To most people in Tanjong Piai near here, Datuk Wee Jeck Seng is a good facilitator who they go to for help — whether the problems are big or small.

Because of this, the Barisan candidate who is defending the Parliamentary seat shares a very special bond with the locals who regard him not just as their elected representative but also as a friend.

The secret to this, said Wee, was to maintain good personal relationship with the people and to always meet and talk to them, even when they were not in need of help.

Wee, who is also MCA central committee member said he always made it a point to personally solve problems faced by the community.

"I also don't believe in sending a representative to any programme involving the local community. And for three hours on every Saturday and Sunday, I will meet with the people to find out about their problems.

"This has always been my routine since I was elected in 2008. Because of this, I have this special relationship with the people as they know that they can approach me with all their problems," he said when met after meeting people in Pekan Nenas near here.

Wee believed in two-way communication and would always seek suggestion from the people on how best to solve their problems.

"Instead of only pouring their problems, most of the time, the people will also give suggestion on how we can go about solving local issues," said Wee.

He seldom waits for the Federal Government to act when something needed to be done but would instead use his allocation for projects that would benefit the people.

Among them is to repair homes that are in bad condition.

"We have repaired about 300 homes, with each costing between RM3,000 and RM10,000," he said.

Wee has also introduced a programme to provide free medical check-up at an alternative medical clinic for the people in Pekan Nenas, Pontian and Kukup and started an e-smart classes where students used I-pads and other high tech gadgets to learn.

Meanwhile, Wong You Fong, who is the Barisan candidate for the Pekan Nenas state seat is also planning to follow Wee's footstep by meeting as many people as she could.

"Although I am a new face in this election, I have been in politics for the last 23 years," said Wong who is also the Johor Wanita MCA chairman.

"I believe that Wee and I will make a dynamic team and together we will be able to serve the people here well," she said adding that she will also focus on issues related to women in the area.

Wong said most of the basic facilities were already in place in Pekan Nenas but upgrades could be made.

"We focus in providing stability and prosperity to the people here and they support us because they understand the long term goals of our transformation plans," he said.

GE13: MCA’s youngest candidate Dr King Ban Seng is ready to take up the challenge

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 03:30 PM PDT

BATU PAHAT: Dr King Ban Siang, 33, the youngest MCA candidate in Johor, is contesting the Penggaram state seat in the general election for the first time.

The Batu Pahat division 1MCA Medical Foundation chief describes his selection as an effort to inject new energy into party team.

"For me age is never a problem as I have a team of people including very supportive senior colleagues who are walking with me in this challenging journey," he said during an interview.

Being young has given him an advantage of physical strength to manage his political works, family and career as a medical doctor.

If given the mandate by the people, he intends to enhance public healthcare services, reduce traffic congestion and further develop the public amenities in the town.

Wanting to help others was the reason he aimed to be a doctor since young and Dr King atributed his success to his late parents who had influenced him to help others.

"My late father was very active in Chinese non-governmental organisations while my late mother was a secretary in Batu Pahat MCA division.

"They have spent a lot of time in voluntary works for the community has inspired me to help and they had always encouraged me to be a doctor as I can help more people directly," he said.

Since his graduation from Aimst university in 2007 in Kedah, Dr King had served in government health clinics and hospitals in Malacca and Batu Pahat.

He is also active in participating voluntary healthcare service in a temple here as well as rural areas in the district before opening his own clinic in Jalan Mas here last year.

"I'm still going to the temple to conduct free health check despite leading the MCA's health care camp since 2010 as I feel that there are still many people who need such services and a need to increase the public awareness on regular health checks," he said.

Dr King, who joined the party in 2008, said he did not expect to be picked to carry the heavy responsibility to stand as candidate for Penggaram state seat.

"Joining a party will provide me a wider reach and that was why I joined MCA," he said, adding that he had met more than 3,000 people through the party's health camps since 2011.

"I will further enhance the health camp to reach out to more people and enhance health system to a higher level.

"I'm glad that many including the underprivileged have benefited from the camps as they are more aware of their health and importance of early detection of diseases," he said, adding that good health is crucial for a better living apart from good local development.

Dr King also pledged to help improve the traffic congestion issues facing the residents in town.

"It will be one of the first thing that I want to address as I have received many feedbacks regarding the traffic congestion in town," he said, adding that he would also monitor the needs of infrastructure development from time to time as it was important for the town's economic growth.

GE13: Koh going independent in Damak

Posted: 26 Apr 2013 03:30 PM PDT

KUANTAN: Pahang DAP vice-chairman Koh Boon Heng is so convinced that he can win in Damak that he has decided to go independent.

This was due to PKR already placing a candidate for the state seat in Jerantut.

"For five years, I have provided continuous service to the community here. The people here knows me very well and support me.

"My chances of victory is very high here," said Koh when contacted.

Koh, who is contesting without a party banner again in his second general election, said he had not informed the DAP before executing his plan.

"As of right now, I am still a DAP member. I am leaving it to the party to decide on what action to take against me," he said.

In the 2008 general election, Koh had contested and lost as an independent in a three-cornered battle in the same seat.

He had since joined DAP but the tussle for the seat with PKR had left him without a shot at being a candidate under the rocket logo.

Koh declined to comment when asked whether his candidacy was actually endorsed by DAP.

He is among four candidates who are vying for the state seat. The others are incumbent Barisan Nasional assemblyman Datuk Lau Lee, PKR's Jamaluddin Abd Rahim and another independent candidate Mohd Nor Jaafar.

Koh will be using the hibiscus symbol.

Meanwhile, state DAP chairman Leong Ngah Ngah has declined to comment on the matter.

Leong had gotten himself into a three-person race for the Tanah Rata state seat in Cameron Highlands.

He will be facing incumbent Barisan assemblyman Datuk Ho Yip Kap and independent candidate Dr Cheam May Choo.

"This will definitely affect my chances of winning. Most of the Chinese community will usually support the Opposition but with the appearance of a third candidate, it might split the votes," said Leong.
