GE13: BN’s Dr Hou fielded against his former student Liew for Kluang parliamentary seat Posted: 25 Apr 2013 04:42 PM PDT KLUANG: An epic battle between a student and teacher will take place in Kluang parliamentary seat for the GE13. Barisan Nasional Dr Hou Kok Chung - the teacher and DAP Liew Chin Tong - the student will do battle in Kluang after both their nomination forms was received by Election Commission. For the elderly folk, it reminds them of the popular hit song of the 60s - "To Sir With Love". Dr Hou, a part time lecturer at New Era College way back in 1999 was teaching the Liew classic Chinese literature for one semester. He added that when he heard rumours that Liew would be fielded as a candidate for the Kluang seat he knew that it was fate that they would meet again. "This is politics and it shows how unpredictable it is as we are bound to meet someone from the past. "As a politician, I will give my all to defend the seat again and I cannot wait to go against him (liew) and to see if he has learned a few things from me," he said. Meanwhile, Liew described the confrontation between him and his former lecturer as a difficult battle. "He is an intellectual person and despite being his student for only one semester I learned a lot from him. "My aim is to ensure that DAP is able to win back the seat back which the party lost in 1982 and since then we been unable to win it back," he said Liew also said that despite being in two different political camps his relationship with Hou still remained strong and still respected him as a teacher. |
GE13: One-year war on leaf-eating insects paying off Posted: 25 Apr 2013 04:19 PM PDT YONG PENG: Former Yong Peng state assemblyman Lim Kee Moi's one-year war with bagworms (leaf eating insects) that are causing oil palm production from the area to drop by about 40% is not over. Although busy with her campaign to defend her seat, Lim is not about to let the bagworm win. And her numerous appeals to the state government and the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB) to help her resolve the problem that is plaguing palm oil estates and smallholders in the area is now paying off. Bagworms or genus metisa plana are leaf-eating insects that spins a silk nest embedded with pieces of dried leaf. It causes damage to crops by defoliating its leaves. Yesterday, she witnessed the MPOB spraying biological microbes to kill the insect using a small aeroplane at Kmpung Ngamorto, near Yong Peng. Lim said the situation a year ago was quite bad as oil palm production in Yong Peng had dropped to an astonishing 40%. "But since the state government together with MPOB took steps to spray the area, the situation has improved, although the infestation is still a problem for about 700 stakeholders in estate and smallholdings in the area. Lim, who was an officer with the state Agriculture Department before becoming a full time politician, said the infestation of bagworms was a major concern as oil palm is one of the major economic drive in Yong Peng. Meanwhile, MPOB applied entomology & microbiology unit biological research division head Dr Siti Ramlah Ahmad Ali said, besides aerial spraying, they also used installation of pheromone traps to prevent the worms from breeding on the oil palm leaves. They also resorted to planting alternative crops to attract insects that prey on bagworms to reduce the infestation. "Bagworms life cycle is about two and a half months where its female could lay more than 300 eggs," she said adding that besides Johor, MPOB also applied similar approaches at palm oil plantation in Perak. She also said that for this year alone, MPOB allocated more than RM8mil to eradicate bagworms in Yong Peng and Segamat. |
