GE13: Abdul Ghani set for the challenge

Posted: 21 Apr 2013 06:59 PM PDT

JOHOR BARU: Johor Barisan Nasional chief Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman is mentally and physically prepared to face DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang in Gelang Patah GE13.

According to his wife Datin Paduka Professor Dr Jamilah Ariffin said he would spend an hour daily to perform lai jin exercise, which is popular in Hong Kong.

She said the exercise was good to improve one's blood circulation and strengthen the joints such as limbs and elbows.

"Lai jin is similar to tai chi but the former is done on a bench including lying on your back and raise your legs up high in the air,'' Jamilah told Star Metro after accompanying Abdul Ghani at the nomination centre in Dewan Serbaguna Skudai here.

Earlier, Abdul Ghani said he had also promoted lai jin to Lim while they were having breakfast together after filling their nomination papers as candidates for the Gelang Patah parliamentary seat.

While having their roti jala with chicken curry and teh tarik in a function room, reporters and photographers from outside could see Abdul Ghani lifting his arms and showing how to perform lai jin to Lim.

Lim and others who shared the table with Abdul Ghani, Skudai state seat contenders - Barisan's Dr Zaini Abu Bakar and Dr Boo Cheng Hau from DAP and Nusajaya candidates state seats Liang Ah Chy from Barisan and Salahuddin Ayub from PAS were seen to enjoy the food and forget all their political differences for a while.

Abdul Ghani said it was not an issue for him to contest in the parliamentary seat after holding the post of Johor Mentri Besar for almost 20 years as it would be his second time contesting in the parliamentary seat.

Abdul Ghani was the former Youth and Sports Minister and one of the main programmes initiated by him while serving the ministry was to introduce the Rakan Muda or Young Peers Prgramme to promote sports, social, arts and cultural activities among youths in the country.

GE13: Independent with a penchant for motorcycles

Posted: 21 Apr 2013 06:59 PM PDT

PASIR GUDANG: An Independent candidate who calls himself "tauke motor" has taken candidates by surprise and has forced a three corner fight for the state seat of Johor Jaya.

Elwin Hong Eng Wah, 50, arrived at the nomination centre in Pasir Gudang accompanied by about 20 bikers.

"I have been preparing to be a candidate for the last two years and the reason why I want to represent the people in Johor Jaya is because I am fed up with rampant crime happening in the area.

"My motorcycle shop in Johor Jaya has been broken into many times and I want to put a stop to this," he said adding that he currently owns a chain of 11 motorcycle shops throughout the country.

Hong, who is a father of four, said that he had already prepared banners and has even set up a service centre in Johor Jaya for voters.

"I am using the symbol of a motorcycle and my motto is "ready to serve"," he said adding that other than clamping down on crime, he hoped to improve cleanliness and eventually start a weekend flee market in the area.

Hong will be contesting against DAP's Liow Cai Tung and incumbent Barisan Nasional (BN) assemblyman Tan Cher Puk.

The Pasir Gudang parliamentary constituency will also see former Pasir Gudang MP Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin competing against Syed Othman Abdullah from PAS for the state seat of Permas.

Newcomer Normala Abdul Samad from BN will also be contesting against PKR's Dr Ahmad Faidhi Saidi for the Pasir Gudang parliamentary seat.

GE13: Incumbent Mengkibol assemblyman set to face the music

Posted: 21 Apr 2013 04:22 PM PDT

JOHOR BARU: The state DAP will recommend to its central executive committee that incumbent Mengkibol assemblyman Ng Lam Hua be sacked from the party.

Its deputy Norman Fernandez said that it was shocking for Ng, who is a member of the state committee, to go independent and contest in the area.

"Any three corner fight there will definitely split the votes," he said, adding that all candidates should realise that when the party gives a seat, it is not given to a person perpetually as the party could always nominate someone else.

Fernandez said that the Ng should know the consequences of his actions and should have instead left with grace after not being nominated by the party.

"I hope that the our members and voters in Kluang and Mengkibol will continue to support our two DAP candidates in the area," he said when contacted.

Fernandez said that the voters that Ng gets on polling day would be a final reflection of the community's confidence in him there.

Ng will be challenging DAP's Tan Hong Ping for the Mengkibol seat.

Meanwhile, Ng after being announced as the candidate he said that he was willing to receive any disciplinary action from DAP including being expelled.

"I am still a DAP member but the party has let me down by not giving me a chance to defend the seat that I won for them in the last election," he added.

For the first time in the state's history, eight seats will see multi-cornered fights including in the parliamentary seats of Kulai and Pengerang.

The Gambir state seat is the only seat with a four-cornered fight. The other seats with independent candidates are in Johor Jaya, Puteri Wangsa, Mengkibol, Bukit Naning and Bukit Batu.
