Gen-Y chefs challenged to prepare five-star banquet for 300 Posted: 23 Apr 2013 06:02 AM PDT EIGHTY budding chefs from eight culinary schools converged at the Youth Chef's Table at the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre (KLCC) with one mission — to produce a stunning 'report card' in the form of a gala dinner for 300 guests under the watchful eyes of executive chef Richmond Lim and his culinary team. Themed "21st Century Young Chefs Cuisine Revolution", the Chefs Association of Malaysia (CAM) Youth Chef's Table aims to educate and nurture young talents; especially Gen-Y, with an opportunity to work as culinary chefs, and to expose them to the behind-the-scenes preparation of the KLCC's five-star banqueting. The aspiring chefs were guided throughout the process; from dealing with suppliers and purchasing raw materials to coming up with the recipes and finally, creating new-age cuisine that meets the five senses. "This initiative augurs well with KLCC's ongoing pursuit for culinary excellence which goes beyond product offering, and further taps into training and development to produce a pool of talent of international standards," said Lim. "Cognisant of this, KLCC had no second thoughts about hosting the Youth Chef's Table for the second year in a row." Participating teams applied the skills and knowledge acquired during their tutorials to the preparation of one course, one canapĂ© and one cocktail or mocktail. "This year, we have upgraded the standard of requirement on skills, food quality and presentation. We want to bring out the best in the participants as encouragement to excel in their chosen career," added Lim. Thanking KLCC and sponsors for their contributions, Chef's Association of Malaysia (CAM) president chef Chern Chee Hoong said their continuing support was crucial to the development of future generations of chefs. The participating schools for the second Youth Chef's Table were BERJAYA University College of Hospitality, Cilantro Culinary Academy, INTI Laureate Inter-national Universities, KDU University College, Kuala Lumpur Metropolitan University College, Legend International College of Hospitality and Tourism, Sunway University and Taylor's University. |
Unforgettable Vaisakhi for two band members Posted: 23 Apr 2013 06:02 AM PDT THIS year's Vaisakhi celebration was the busiest ever for Sri Dasmesh Band members Tirath Singh, 16, and Jasroop Singh, 17. The teenagers had been practising every weekend since early this year for the band's performance to welcome Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife to the Gurdwara Sahib in Petaling Jaya. It was not only the boys' first performance at a gurdwara on Vasakhi, it was also their first time playing for the prime minister. Form Five student Jasroop, who plays the drums, said in previous years, they usually spent Vaisakhi singing kirtan (religions hymns) and offering prayers, with their families. "This year, we had many requests for performances so we have been extremely busy," he said. Tirath, who plays the bagpipes, said his resolution for the year ahead was to become a better musician. "I want to practise more and improve myself. I am also praying for a good year ahead for my family and all Malaysians," he said when met at the gurdwara after the celebration. The Sri Dasmesh Band is also known as the Malaysian Sikh Band. Vaisakhi, a harvest festival, celebrates the birth of the Sikh community, collectively known as the Khalsa and is one of the most auspicious celebrations in the Sikh calendar. |
