GE13: DAP branches pledge support for local boy Lim Soon Hong

Posted: 15 Apr 2013 04:24 AM PDT

SEVERE in-fighting is brewing within the Kuala Langat DAP for the Teluk Datuk state seat candidacy.

The Kuala Langat DAP Parliamentary Liaison Committee's (PLC) refusal to accept Teluk Datuk incumbent assemblyman Tan Choon Swee has put the DAP leadership under tremendous pressure.

As nomination day draws closer, StarMetro was made to understand that the in-fighting has intensifed especially as the list of candidates has not been announced.

Twelve out of the 14 DAP branches in Kuala Langat have thrown their support behind PLC secretary Lim Soon Hong, who is a local boy.

They have also conducted a signature campaign against Tan in their bid to get rid of the Klang businessman who defeated Barisan Nasional's Datuk Ei Kim Hock with a majority of 638 in the 2008 general election.

A joint memorandum containing signatures from the members has been sent to the party leadership.

Kuala Langat PLC chairman Low Chai Eng said they were determined to fight it out with the party leadership in their quest to ensure a local candidate was given the opportunity to contest.

He said the members had made it clear that Tan or any other outsider would not get their support if made a candidate in Teluk Datuk.

"Tan has failed miserably to convince the PLC and its members that he cares about the party as he still holds a membership outside Kuala Langat even after five years of being the Teluk Datuk assemblyman.

"Tan has not opened any new branches and is not interested in strenghtening the party," he said.

Low added that Lim, 57, on the other hand, was the PLC secretary and the state publicity secretary who also held various important positions in the community, including chairmanship of the Kuala Langat Chinese Primary School Development Committee.

"He holds a degree in psyhchology from Taiwan National University and is a capable person who knows the constituency in and out.

"Lim is well-respected among the locals," he said.

Besides retaining the seat, Low said he was confident DAP would win with a bigger majority if Lim was made the candidate.

He said the party leadership was aware of their stand and hoped they would take it into account.

Sungai Manggis Selatan DAP branch chairman and former Kuala Langat district councillor P. Pathmanathan said Lim would be the ideal person to contest for the seat.

Being a local, he said, the constituents would enjoy good service and he would be right there whenever needed.

"We are hoping that Lim will be given the seat," he said.

Lim said he was prepared to be a candidate if given the opportunity to do so.

Lim, who had also served as a local councillor in 2008 and contested for the seat in the 1999 general election, said he believed that the locals would also give him a lot more support compared to a candidate from another place.

"I have my family, relatives and a lot of friends who will vote for me," he said.
