Prince to top bill at Montreux Jazz Festival Posted: 18 Apr 2013 05:56 AM PDT GENEVA: Music fans can expect a host of big names at this year's edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, with three concerts by Prince as well as shows by Leonard Cohen, Sting and Joe Cocker, organisers announced Thursday. "Prince wanted to come, he even asked himself. We don't know what he's going to do, but by definition it will be great," said the festival's new director Mathieu Jaton. The July 4-21 event on the shores of Lake Geneva is the 47th edition of the festival, which has retained its jazz label despite expanding its repertoire over the years. It is the first since iconic founder Claude Nobs - widely respected in the music business - died in a skiing accident in January aged 76. A traditional magnet for international stars, the festival will also see an 80th birthday concert by Quincy Jones, who worked closely with Nobs from the beginning. Others on the eclectic bill include Paolo Conte, Diana Krall, George Benson, Deep Purple, Kraftwerk, ZZ Top, Ben Harper, Brian May, Marcus Miller, Wyclef Jean, Randy Crawford, Cat Power, Green Day and Woodkid with Orchestra. To accommodate the star-studded list, this year's 18-day edition is two days longer than usual. - AFP |
Will.I.Am records Mona Lisa song in Paris' Louvre Posted: 18 Apr 2013 01:40 AM PDT PARIS (AFP) - Grammy award winning US musician Will.I.Am was allowed into Paris's Louvre museum at two in the morning to record part of a song entitled Smile Mona Lisa in front of the famed painting by Leonardo da Vinci, he told reporters in Paris on Wednesday. "That song touches me because I recorded a large portion of that song inside the Louvre, next to Mona Lisa's picture," the lead singer (pic) of the Black Eyed Peas said, adding that the song would appear on his next solo album. "They let me go to the Louvre at 2am to record the guitars for that song, I wanted to capture the ambiance of the Louvre, that Mona Lisa lives in. That was exciting, to walk through the Louvre at 2am with the manager," he said. The singer added that if he had not entered the world of music he would have wanted to have been a scientist. "I'm fascinated with quantum physics. That's the reason why I'm going back to school this September to learn computer science," he said. And he urged young people to look to new technology for opportunities. "If you live in a ghetto and really want not to just change your life and your family's life but change your ghetto's life, make your ghetto a good neighbourhood, learn science, try to be like Mark Zuckerberg, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs," he said. "You'll change not just your family and your neighbourhood, you'll change your whole city. Music is great, athletics is great, but the guys in Silicon valley and the dudes that make Twitter and Facebook , they're changing the world," he added. |
Meat Loaf pulls out of second concert Posted: 17 Apr 2013 11:37 PM PDT LONDON (Reuters) - American rocker Meat Loaf pulled out of a second concert in Britain on Wednesday as health problems continued to dog the 65-year-old singer. Meat Loaf, whose 1977 Bat Out Of Hell remains one of the biggest selling albums, is travelling around Europe on his farewell Last At Bat tour which he claims will be his last after struggling with health problems in recent years. On Sunday he cancelled the fifth of eight concerts in Britain just hours before he was due on stage, saying several members of the band were ill. Now, he has cancelled a concert due to be held in the northern English city of Manchester on Wednesday evening. "Unfortunately not all band members have recovered and the doctors have not given us the green light to go ahead," said a statement on the singer's Facebook page. "We fully expect the tour to continue on Friday in Sheffield." Meat Loaf (pic), whose real name is Marvin Lee Aday, cancelled a European Tour in 2007 after being diagnosed with a cyst on his vocal chords and sparked further fears for his health in 2011 when he collapsed on stage. Last year he underwent a knee replacement operation and is due to have an operation on his other knee shortly. |
