Psy's 'Gentleman' hits 100 mn YouTube views Posted: 17 Apr 2013 12:29 AM PDT SEOUL: "Gangnam Style" star Psy's new music video crossed the 100 million views mark on YouTube Wednesday, shattering another record on the video-sharing site since its much-anticipated weekend debut. The video for "Gentleman", the long-awaited follow-up to the South Korean singer's global hit, has received 105.4 million hits, topping 100 million in record time since it was posted Saturday. The previous record was set by the video of Britain's Got Talent star Susan Boyle singing "I Dreamed A Dream" in the TV show, which received 100 million hits in just over a week in 2009. Psy's latest offering also racked up around 20 million hits in the first 24 hours, smashing the previous record for first-day views of 8.0 million set by Canadian star Justin Bieber's "Boyfriend" video in May 2012. The video shows Psy, wearing his signature sunglasses, dancing at various locations in and around Seoul including a high-end clothing store, restaurant, swimming pool and a library. The storyline features the singer teasing and playing practical jokes on women, such as pulling their chairs away as they are about to sit or untying a woman's bikini top at a swimming pool, before meeting his match. It was the video of "Gangnam Style", and in particular Psy's signature horse-riding dance, that pushed him to global stardom last year after it was posted on YouTube and turned into a viral sensation. A satire on the luxury lifestyle of Seoul's upscale Gangnam district, it has become the most-watched YouTube video of all time, registering more than 1.5 billion views since it debuted last July. "Gentleman" was ranked Wednesday in the top 10 songs on iTunes stores in a number of countries including France, Australia, Canada and Britain and topped the chart in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and Greece. Critical reactions to the song were mixed but the video - showing the quirky singer's signature self-mocking humour as well as the new hip-swivelling dance - left many fans satisfied. "I can tell that by July, people around the world will do that dance," said one of 500,000 YouTube users who posted comments.-AFP |
Ozzy Osbourne tells family he's sorry for drink, drugs binge Posted: 16 Apr 2013 10:02 PM PDT LONDON (Reuters) - Black Sabbath singer Ozzy Osbourne apologised on Tuesday for bingeing on drink and drugs over the last year and a half but said he was not getting a divorce from his wife Sharon. The British singer's comments on his Facebook page were a response to media speculation about the state of his marriage, with reports that he and Sharon had split up after more than 30 years and were living separately. "Just to set the record straight, Sharon and I are not divorcing," Osbourne, 64, said on his Facebook page. "I'm just trying to be a better person." He said he had been drinking and taking drugs for the last year and a half and had been in a "very dark place", but has now been sober for 44 days. Osbourne, who made his name as lead singer of the heavy metal band Black Sabbath, has frequently spoken over the years about his battle with drugs and alcohol and has spent time in rehabilitation clinics. "I would like to apologize to Sharon, my family, my friends and my band mates for my insane behavior during this period ... and my fans," wrote Osbourne. The Osbournes have become one of Hollywood's most famous couples since starring in a reality television show, The Osbournes, alongside two of their children, Jack and Kelly, which gave an insight into their family life in Beverly Hills. Son Jack also dismissed the rumours of a family bust-up. "Last time I check (sic) a lot of British news papers weren't amazing sources of accurate information. Moving on..." he wrote on Twitter. Sharon Osbourne, 60, was a regular panellist on U.S. reality TV talent show America's Got Talent and played out a battle with colon cancer in public. |
Aerosmith's Tyler, Perry honoured for songwriting Posted: 16 Apr 2013 09:50 PM PDT LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - After 40 years with one of the biggest rock bands in the United States, Aerosmith frontman Steven Tyler and guitarist Joe Perry are finally being honoured for their songwriting. The duo, dubbed the Toxic Twins in their drug-fueled early years, co-wrote many of the bands' biggest hits like Walk This Way and Back In The Saddle, which catapulted Aerosmith to fame in the mid-1970s. After winning multiple Grammys and other accolades, Tyler and Perry will be honored on Wednesday with the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers founders award for songwriting. They will be also inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame on 13 June. Tyler and Perry will miss the ASCAP ceremony because they will be on the Australian leg of the band's Global Warming world tour in support of their first album of new material since 2001. The duo told Reuters ahead of Wednesday's ceremony that they draw much of their inspiration from each other, although Perry admits the process may be a bit tamer than in the 1970s and 1980s when he and Tyler turned out some big hits while under the influence of drugs. "Taking drugs can be a shortcut to that place of creativity, but it will kill you in the end because it stops working," Perry said. "We had to figure out how to change the way we did things," said Perry, 62, who is working on an autobiography and a solo record project. Tyler, the son of a classical pianist, formed Aerosmith in Boston in 1970 after meeting Perry and bass player Tom Hamilton a year earlier. They signed a record deal in 1971 and what followed were four often tumultuous decades filled with thousands of concerts, band break-ups, well-chronicled bouts of drug abuse, glorious comebacks and sales of more than 150 million albums worldwide. "We all just get together in a room and inspire each other," said Tyler, 65, who at 17 wrote the signature Aerosmith hit, Dream On, before meeting his future band members. "The secret is to overwrite. I like to write 19 songs if I only need 12," said Tyler, who quit last year after two seasons as a judge on American Idol to refocus on Aerosmith. Asked how his writing methods have changed over the years, Perry said he now loves composing songs with the help of his smartphone recording device. "Bottom line, I always have a studio with me. It's called an iPhone," said Perry. He said he also likes to have a guitar in every room of his home in case inspiration strikes, often pausing the TV while watching late at night to lay down a new musical phrase or riff that comes into his head. "I just feel like that there are too many rhythms that haven't been explored in my head. Even in the narrow confines of rock 'n' roll, there's an infinite amount of places to go," Perry said. Tyler said he has a lot of new material to work on, including some songs he began but did not complete for the band's November release Music From Another Dimension. "I have 30 thumbnail sketches I haven't finished, including four without any lyrics," Tyler said. |
