Inter-faith gathering pray for fallen security men Posted: 15 Mar 2013 07:53 PM PDT MALACCA: The Malaysian Consultative Council of Buddhism, Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism and Taoism (MCCBCHST) Malacca's chapter held a special interfaith prayer for fallen heroes of the Lahad Datu intrusion. The prayers on Tuesday night was also held to pay tribute to national heroes who were injured in the conflict which erupted after foreign militants attacked the east coast of Sabah. The attacks by the intruders have left eight policemen dead and several others injured. Malacca MCCBCHST secretary Ronald Gan said the interfaith prayers were considered the maiden event jointly organised by leaders of various religions to pay tribute to the fallen heroes and also the injured. "Our Muslim brothers from Malacca also joined in the prayer turning the event a very auspicious one," he said. Gan said the interfaith prayer that was themed "For Peace but not for War" was attended by some 200 individuals at the Good Shepherd Seminary in Lorong Laksamana Cheng Ho. "I am proud to be with this inter-religious prayer service and it should be made an annual event with participation of the youths of different religious background in bid to foster the spirit of tolerance and harmony," Gan said. The MCCBCHST later handed over cash of RM4,331 to Malacca Police Chief Senior Asst Comm Datuk Chuah Ghee Lye to be channelled to aid national heroes. The gathering saw Chan Tian Kok from the Taoism group followed by Rev. A. Ratanasiri from the Seck Kia Eenh Buddhist Association Group, Rev. Fr. Edward Rayappan from St Theresa Church, A. Krishnan from the Hindu Sangam, Harcharan Singh from the Malacca Sikh Temple and Ustaz Mohammad Jaafar Ng with some of their respective devotees taking turns to recite prayers for those who had perished. MCCBCHST members also lighted candles of various sizes and colours to honour the fallen security men. SAC Chuah on accepting the donation said that he was delighted to know that Malacca was the first state to organise an inter-religious prayer service. "I am very touched and happy to see Malaccans from the six main religions, finding time to gather at the seminary like one united family to pray for the security forces who had been killed while carrying out their duties to protect the sovereignty of the nation," he added. |
Posted: 15 Mar 2013 05:57 PM PDT KUANTAN: The Chinese community must remain united lest they become fractured and lose their identity, said Kuantan MCA chief Datuk Ti Lian Ker. He said there were no government departments to look after the interests of the Chinese and the only one to do so was a political party, the MCA. "Look at the Chinese in other countries where nobody looks after them. "At least here in Malaysia, we still have our language, culture, education, community and more importantly, our identity," said Ti at a 1MCA health carnival here recently. He said MCA was doing its best to help the youth and the ill but it could not reach out to everyone. "We cannot reach 100% coverage and this is why some people are not satisfied and they start attacking MCA. "The Opposition also take this opportunity to hit us," said Ti, adding that not many wanted to perform the welfare work done by MCA because of this. He said compared to DAP, MCA's community work was not only one or two times better but 10 times better. During the event, hundreds of people show up for free health screenings done by the 1MCA Foundation. A health talk about diabetes was also delivered by BP Healthcare Group pharmacist Ng Yen Ping. Ng said the event was the most organised of all the 1MCA health carnivals that he had been invited to. Also present were Kuantan Municipal Council member Ngoh Tian Meng and Kuantan MCA division deputy chairman Laow Weng Choon. |
Lonely rider robbed on coastal highway Posted: 15 Mar 2013 05:56 PM PDT PASIR GUDANG: The coastal highway that links Pasir Gudang to the city has become a hotspot for snatch thieves and robbers. Among the victims is carpenter Lee Yau Heng, 49, who was robbed while on his way to Singapore for work. "On the day of the incident, I left my house in Taman Rinting here at about 4.30am, and took the coastal highway heading towards the Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine complex (CIQ). "Not long after turning into the highway, two men on a motorcycle flagged me down and when I stopped to see what was wrong, they threatened me with a knife and robbed me," he said adding that he made a u-turn as an attempt to escape but was stopped by the two other accomplices on another motorcycle. Lee also said that the robbers took his belongings including his credit cards, identification card, driving licence and also some cash. "They hit my mouth and stomach with a helmet, which caused a broken tooth, and then kicked me into a drain, and left me lying there. "The area was quiet and dark during the incident on Mar 5, as it was still quite early in the morning and the street lights were off," he told reporters when met on Mar 9. Pusat Aduan Rakyat (PAR) Permas zone supervisor Syed Othman Syed Abdullah said he had received about 19 complains regarding such crimes over the last week. "Five other complaints from residents around Taman Megah Ria and Taman Rinting, were very similar to Lee's story. "The modus operandi of the suspects were similar in the five cases, whereby the suspect attacked their victims during the dark along the coastal highway," he said adding that he hoped that the authorities would look into the matter soon. Seri Alam OCPD Supt Ruslan Zainuddin confirmed receiving police reports and said that the police were trying to clamp down on the robbers involved. "The public should be more aware of their surroundings especially when travelling along the stretch," he said adding that the police would also heighten patrols to ensure the safety of motorists. |
