Residents cry foul as waste water flows into drain

Posted: 26 Mar 2013 04:09 AM PDT

RESIDENTS of Taman Melur and Taman Saga, Ampang are unhappy that waste water is flowing into the drain near the housing area instead of being channelled into the Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) sewerage system.

Neighbourhood Committee pre-sident in charge of safety Abd Naim Safar, 65, said the IWK drainage pipe was not connected and he had complained to the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council (MPAJ) but that no action was taken.

"IWK also came here in February and discovered that there is no water under the manhole covers.

"I hope IWK will check the drainage system as I suspect that there is a leakage somewhere in the system.

"If that is the case, the waste water will be seeping into the earth under the houses," he said.

Taman Melur Residents Ass-ociation president Lau Kai Kong, 50, said there should be a connection between the pipes under the manhole covers and IWK's drainage systems.

"Now, all the waste water is coming out at the drain and we can sometimes smell the stench coming from there," he said.

Teratai constituency public complaints bureau chief Ben Liew said if the condition was left unrepaired, homeowners will face a backflow of sewage from their toilets.

"If the piping system is not repaired, a landslide may occur. There are also signs of soil erosion around the drain," he said.

Indah Water Konsortium Sdn Bhd (IWK) communications department manager Shahrul Nizam Sulaiman said a sewage pipe was installed in the area in 1994.

"We urge the developers to fix their pipes to the main sewage pipe," he said.

Hata Holdings Sdn Bhd property developer director Chang Siew Hong said they would discuss the problem with IWK to find a solution.

Taman Melur residents want a sound barrier on main road

RESIDENTS of Jalan Melur 1, Taman Melur in Ampang want the Public Works Department (PWD) to build a sound barrier on Jalan Taman Putra to reduce noise pollution and, more importantly, prevent cars from crashing into their housing area.

Phase 1 Taman Melur Residents Committee president Hairil Adli Ibrahim said this was urgently needed as traffic lights at the Jalan Taman Putra intersection were often faulty, leading to traffic chaos.

"Most motorists speed on this road and when there is a crash, the vehicle plunges in," he said.

Hairil, who has been living in the area for more than 10 years, said he had witnessed a number of such accidents, especially after office hours.

"There is at least one accident every month," he said, adding that he had planted some plants to form a barrier, as a temporary safety measure.

Hairil said he had also reported the problem to the Ampang Jaya Municipal Council but the council claimed that the area was not under its jurisdiction.

"I then wrote to PWD but no action has been taken so far," he said, adding that residents had been facing this problem for the past 15 years.

Another resident, Ismail Abdul Aziz, said they were afraid that lives would be endangered if the problem was not resolved.

"I have told my children not to play outside as accidents could happen at any time.

"Luckily, our cars parked on the roadside have not been damaged by the accidents so far," he said.

The residents said a sound barrier would prevent the vehicles from being flung into the area, besides reducing noise.

Hairil said the noise from the vehicles especially the buses, lorries and motorcycles, were annoying, especially in the evening.
