National cyclist wins men’s open sprint in Shah Alam Criterium Posted: 15 Mar 2013 06:02 AM PDT NATIONAL cyclist Anuar Manan showed off his prowess during the Shah Alam Criterium recently where he came out tops in his category. Anuar, known to many as the speed king, sprinted through the 15 laps of the race which took riders around the city's Persiaran Tasik. During each of the 2.2km loop, he was calm and controlled, despite the challenging mix of flat and hilly stretches throughout the route. Fellow teammates Ahmad Fakhrullah Alias and Mohd Fakhruddin Daud, who have also represented the country in various cycling tournaments abroad, gave Anuar a close chase when the two came in second and third, respectively. Last year's SEA Games gold medallist Fatehah Mustapha, claimed top spot in the women's open category with ease. The 23-year-old, who is preparing for her Asian Championship in New Delhi, India this month, proved that she is on top of her game when she completed the race ahead of fellow cyclists Jupha Somnet and Maziatul Radzi. This year's race attracted 400 participants from various cycling clubs as well as amateurs and seasoned riders across the country. The annual competition was divided into two sessions where riders on mountain bikes, BMX and children competed in the morning while the sprint riders raced in the evening. "Cycling is a popular sport in Shah Alam and many more are picking up the sport along with their children," said Shah Alam City Council corporate communications deputy director Shahrin Ahmad when speaking about the new category to include children aged four and five in the race. He said the council had been helping to boost the sport through various cycling events. "We have also paved a 6km route around Section 4, 5 and 6 for cyclists to ride safely," said Shahrin, adding that the route would be open soon. |
