At-home physical therapy using Kinect

Posted: 20 Mar 2013 10:43 PM PDT

A new tool that uses online and Kinect video games to help guide physical therapy patients through their exercises at home -- to help keep them motivated and on track -- just launched in private beta this week.

Home Team Therapy, created by MIT graduate Tim Fu, aims to help patients recover from injuries better and quicker by helping them adhere to exercises prescribed by their physical therapist while at home.

The idea spawned after Fu himself tore his ACL, which led to surgery and six months of physical therapy, according to Mashable. "It was a really tough process, especially at home, without the coaching of a physical therapist," he told the site.

The program's Kinect application can track patients performing their exercises and alert them to whether or not they've got the right technique. "Think 'Dance Central' for physical therapy," Fu told Mashable.

The Kinect application is being developed for Windows, so users only need a PC and a Kinect sensor. So far, the plan is to charge patients a monthly subscription of about $20.

Showcased at SXSW's Interactive Accelerator in Austin this year, Home Team Therapy plans to launch its services this summer. -- AFPRelaxnews
