MALACCA: The Malacca Immigration Department had earned about RM13.9mil in revenue through International passport issuance for the whole of last year.

Department's director Kamalludin Ismail said the income was derived from 87,279 passport applications made in 2012 compared to 72,388 applications in 2011.

"Malacca recorded an increase in passport applications compared to 2011 that influenced our total earning for last year, apart from income deriving from other sources," he told reporters during a gathering that was also attended by his deputy Azlan Jawawi, recently.

Kamalludin also revealed that the department conducted 447 operations in 2012 in a bid to eliminate illegals in the state where some 2,120 foreigners were detained for violating the visit passes and work permits.

He said in 2011, the department conducted 291 operations and detained 1,346 foreigners for similar offences.

"Compounds from enforcement exercises increased 4.5% for 2012 where RM232,590 was collected compared to RM222,110 in 2011," he said.

On the arrival of tourists via the new Immigration, Custom and Quarantine complex, Kamalludin said the volume increase to 154,320 visitors last year compared to 142,743 in the previous year before the facility was opened.

Delving on the total income earned in 2012, Kamalludin noted that the figure increased by 7.2% from RM88mil in 2011 to RM94.9mil, last year.

Kamalludin said his men are prepared to place more efforts to double the income of this year by enhancing their quality of service and intensifying operations to eradicate illegals.

Anti-Cyanide Gold Mining Committee members gatecrash function

Posted: 27 Feb 2013 06:38 PM PST

RAUB: Several members of the Anti-Cyanide Gold Mining Committee gatecrashed a dinner function organised by Raub MCA in Bukit Koman, creating a ruckus before leaving in a huff after their demand to speak was not entertained.

Led by its vice-chairman Sherly Hue, the committee members who were not invited arrived at about 7pm on Sunday before proceeding to distribute flyers and pamphlets to the residents, numbering about 800 people.

Despite not being formally invited, the host provided them with seats as several MCA division leaders took turns to address the crowd on stage.

Raub MCA division assistant organising secretary Lim Teck Hoe, incurred the ire of Hue when he detailed the chronology of events pertaining to several requests by the committee.

"Since June last year, the committee wanted to have a meeting with top party leaders, set up a joint-health committee which also saw the involvement of DAP Kepong MP and dermatologist Dr Tan Seng Giaw and a 24-hour air quality monitoring system in the area.

"All these requests were fulfilled as MCA is just as concerned with the issue and would not shy away from its responsibilities," he said in his speech.

Lim's remarks did not go down well with Hue, prompting her to walk up to the VIP table and waited for a chance to rebut.

When Lim was about to end his speech, Hue tried to take over the microphone to address the crowd on stage.

However, Lim held on to it, causing Hue to create a ruckus, chiding Lim for not allowing her a chance to defend herself.

She then left with the other committee members after a heated exchange which lasted about 10 minutes.

Lim said it was not proper for her to speak as it was a party function.

"Despite not being invited, we did not stop her from attending and distributing flyers to the residents," he said.

When contacted by Star Metro, the committee's chairman Wong Kin Hoong defended the action of Hue, saying it was not an act of "gate-crashing."

"They just wanted to give out flyers to the residents and obtain information from the leaders who were present.

"She is just carrying out her responsibilities for the sake of the people's health and wellbeing," he said, while hitting out at the MCA for organising such dinners and giving out cash handouts.

Wong said they could have resorted to asking the villagers not to attend and claimed many of them were "outsiders" and children.

He said those who spoke on stage were not experts in health issues and the only way to resolve the matter conclusively was by changing the Government.
