Kedah boys all charged up

SMK Tunku Anum of Kedah are hoping to continue their winning momentum at the ongoing Minister Education League Cup (MELC) .

The two-time (MELC) champions won the MELC Charity Shield crown after edging SMK Seri Titiwangsa 3-1 on penalties at Stadium Bola Sepak Kuala Lumpur, Cheras on Saturday.

After regulation time ended, both teams were tied at 1-1, forcing a penalty shootout.

Tunku Anum had Yazman Sohmi, Aizat Safuan Razali and Haikal Hakimi to thank for delivering the goals.

Seri Titiwangsa's solitary goal was slotted by Syuaib Mohamad.

Tunku Anum's coach Basirul Abu Bakar breathed a huge sigh of relief as his boys were crowned champions in the Charity Shield.

He admitted that the match was balanced and they were lucky to win.

"We managed to score a goal through a counter-attack attempt in the first half but our mistake at the end of the game led our opponent to score a goal.

"My captain was red-carded, too, so I feel lucky that we won the match but my boys held up the defence well.

"We will shift our focus to our second match against Kelantan and I believe there are some flaws in my team with the absence of my team captain but I believe that other players can be able to fill up his role," added Basirul.

Seri Titiwangsa coach Rozlan Alias said he felt a bit disappointed over the loss because they managed to play better in the second half.

"We managed to get the equalising goal seven minutes from time. Furthermore, when Tunku Anum's captain was red-carded, I thought we could capitalise on our advantage, but it was not to be.

"Overall, we did not lose as we managed to get one point from this game and we will improve the quality of our games in KPM Super league and Cup," said Rozlan, who is targeting a top three finish in the league and semi-finals for the Cup challenge.

Tunku Anum's goalscorer Aizat Safuan was also given the match "Best Player" award.
