Plethora of orchids on display Posted: 08 Jan 2013 05:22 PM PST JOHOR BARU: Thousands of colourful orchids, including some imported from Taiwan, were displayed at the annual Orchid Exhibition held here recently. Visitors of the exhibition not only caught a glimpse of a wide variety of orchids but could also purchase flowers and participate in activities including drawing and cooking competitions in line with the event. Student Muhd Nasrulhaq Nasha-ruddin, 17, who was part of his school's orchid society, visited the exhibition with other members of the society to learn more about the orchid plant. "We have over 50 flower pots of orchids that we tend to every day, and so we took the opportunity to learn more about the ways of caring for it and the many species available," said student from Maktab Sultan Abu Bakar. Another visitor Michelle Heng Shieh Peng who came with her mother and grandmother said that her family loved orchids and owned at least 10 types of it. "We want to expand the collection of orchids in our house and so we took this opportunity to find some different species here," said Heng, 35, a factory operator. Retired customer officer Zaharah Abdul Aziz, 60 said the exhibition was a unique event with a wide range of beautiful orchids decorated all around. "It is my first time attending such at exhibition and I am amazed at the variety of orchids available," she said adding that she possessed more than 10 species of orchids for her home. Also among the crowd was primary school teacher, R. Jayaletchumi, 26, who said that the exhibition was a good way to educate people about the many species of orchids. Johor Tourism director Md Zainal Misram said that there were a total of 10 booths set up, including booths for exhibition and sales, for the two-day event. "There are more than 20 different species of orchids here including some from Taiwan," he said adding that there was also the best-decorated booth competition for the exhibition. He said that there would be an orchid garden set up as a tourist attraction at the Malay Village after its completion, which is expected to be in 2014. The orchid exhibition was organised by Johor Tourism in conjunction with the Johor Malay Village groundbreaking ceremony held at Danga Bay here on Jan 5. The event was also graced by Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Abdul Ghani Othman and his wife Datin Paduka Prof Dr Jamilah Ariffin. Before attending the event, Abdul Ghani also launched the ground-breaking ceremony for Limaspuri Melayu Johor, a Malay cultural village depicting life-sized, traditional Johor houses. The project which is developed by Cahaya Jauhar will be located at Danga Bay and will include the building of 10 traditional Malay houses from various districts in the state and is scheduled to be completed by 2014. |
Local uni sees increase of endowment fund as first step to hit global top 50 Posted: 08 Jan 2013 05:26 PM PST JOHOR BARU: Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) plans to raise RM50mil this year for its Endowment Fund bringing the accumulated figure to RM100mil by the end of the year from RM53.6mil as of 2012. Its vice-chancellor, Professor Datuk Dr Zaini Ujang, said the RM50mil target could be achieved through two newly introduced schemes - Wakaf Akademia Baru (WKB) and Skim Wakaf Alumni (SKA). He said the university hoped that WKB would generate RM10mil and while SKA RM40mil. "We will hold various activities from time to time to raise funds to ensure we are able to implement our programmes and activities as planned,'' said Dr Zaini after delivering his New Year's speech to UTM staff recently. At the event, the fund received RM500,000 in donations including RM100,000 from Maha Persada Holdings Sdn Bhd and RM300,000 from Maha Persada Capital Sdn Bhd respectively. He said the university would take proactive measures by forging closer relationships with its alumni members which currently number 170,000. Dr Zaini said its successful graduates could be roped in to help transform UTM into one of the top 50 global universities by 2020 as outlined under its Global Plan 2012-2020. "It is a big task for us to emerge as one of the top 50 global universities but it could be done through proper planning and continous support from all parties," he added. Similarly, he said the university would continue with its prudent spending practices which it introduced in 2010, and look at ways to further fine-tune and improve on the existing methods. Dr Zaini said these include reducing per capita budget for refreshments at official functions or events and department meetings within the university. |
Job galore as expo offers seekers 10k positions Posted: 08 Jan 2013 05:28 PM PST JOHOR BARU: Job seekers who are attending the upcoming Career and Postgraduate Expo 2013 to be held at the KSL Expo Hall (Level 1) this weekend will be spoilt for choice. The two-day event, running from Jan 12 to 13, offers over 10,000 job opportunities from more than 20 different industries and sectors from Malaysia and Singapore. Apart from companies, some 20 colleges and universities will also put up 30 booths to showcase their courses for postgraduates. "The main objective of the event is to match the right candidates with the right jobs in line with the government's economic transformation programme," said PenExpo managing director Francis Wong. He said that there would also be job opportunities available for the disabled and handicapped during the event. Wong hopes that the disabled and handicapped job seekers would take the opportunity to visit the event, as the respective companies will be assisting to offer jobs that match their physical abilities. "Let's say a company hires a disabled person, we hope it will be able to provide the necessary training to assist him or her to be more independent," he added. Lucky visitors stand a chance to walk away with two new iPads for the daily lucky draws throughout the expo. The fair is jointly organised by PenExpo Events and SCOPE. PenExpo's recent career fair held in Penang last November attracted over 30,000 attendees.
