Motorists who fail to pay outstanding summonses will be brought to court, says traffic police

JOHOR BARU: Traffic offenders, including motorists from Singapore, who fail to settle their outstanding summonses within a month from the date issued will be hauled to court.

The police issued the stern warning as many of them are taking it too lightly to settle the fines.

Johor Baru (South) traffic chief Deputy Supt Ooi Kok Seong said about 13,000 summonses were issued last year for various traffic offences within the Johor Baru district.

"Over the years the number of summonses have increased gradually but many of the traffic offenders have not settled their dues on time," he told StarMetro.

He cited a previous case where a motorist was ordered by the court to settle her outstanding summonses for two years amounting to RM48,000.

"If payments are made within a month, motorists would get a discount between 30% and 50% depending on how fast they settle it," he said adding that the police would not entertain those who wanted to settle their fines after the one month grace period was over.

He said upon the expiry of the one-month grace period, traffic offenders would have to face the court once the arrest warrants were issued, and the police would conduct arrest warrants operation to apprehend them.

DSP Ooi said the court then might order them to pay up to three times more than the original amount of the fine under Section 119 of the Road Transport Act 1987 for failure to pay traffic summonses.

He also said that there would not be any leniency or discounts for six traffic offences - illegal parking, accidents, beating red traffic lights, failure to use safety belts and helmets, and using hand phones while driving.

Meanwhile, it was previously reported in StarMetro that there has been ongoing problem with motorists illegally parking their cars along the roadsides and road curbs in and around the Taman Pelangi area.

On that note, DSP Ooi said about 650 summonses were issued last year alone, mostly for illegal parking along Jalan Kuning, Jalan Maju and Jalan Tekun.

"The number of summonses iss-ued in the Taman Pelangi are constantly on the rise, ranging between 500 and 600 summonses monthly.

"Many are not adhering to traffic rules and failed to heed the warnings given by the traffic police on duty, just to save a little on parking fees," he said.

Please pray for our State, says Sultan of Pahang

Posted: 25 Jan 2013 06:37 PM PST

ROMPIN: State Qadhis have been told to conduct a special prayer (Solat Hajat) in all mosques on the first Friday of each month to ask God for peace in the state.

Sultan Pahang Sultan Ahmad Shah Sultan Abu Bakar said the prayer is also to ask that Pahang is free from any natural calamities.

Sultan Ahmad Shah said as Muslims, everyone should ask God for help and hopefully with their prayers, Pahang will not be hit by floods or any other disasters.

Despite predictions that there will be a second wave of flood, Sultan Ahmad Shah said it was only the people's predictions based on their studies and knowledge.

"Allah is Great, Allah knows better.

"I have experienced worst floods to hit Pahang in 1970 when I was the Tengku Mahkota.

"From that experience I learnt so much of what was should be done to help flood victims," Sultan Ahmad Shah said after visiting 51 families who are still staying at the relief centre in Kampong Leban Chondong, here recently.

Also present were Rompin Member of Parliament Datuk Seri Dr jamaluddin Jarjis and Human Resources deputy Minister Datuk Maznah Mazlan.

Sultan Ahmad Shah said he had been assured by the Government officers that the flood victims would receive the most appropriate help during their stay at the relief centres.

"On the Government's part, we have to realise the hardship and sacrifices that the victims have to go through during the floods.

"They have to leave their homes, belongings and their routine activities due to floods.

"When they are in the centres they needed something similar to the comfort of their homes.

Sultan Ahmad Shah added that because of that, "the Government has to give them the best treatment by providing them comforters, blankets, healthy food, easy access for them to bath, and so on."

He said the flood relief workers should be dedicated and committed to their jobs when handling the problems faced by the flood victims.

"Prove your worthiness as Government staff. The Government is concerned about the people's needs and therefore the delivery services by relief workers should be up to the mark," he said.

Sultan Ahmad Shah said he had also been assured that food supply and other needs for people in Tioman Island are in good hands because when the monsoon season starts, the rough seas will hinder them to from travelling to the mainland to seek for the supplies.
